Nanjing Metro

南京地铁. An 11-line network connecting Nanjing's historical monuments, university district, and both rail stations, with airport metro access.

About this metro system

Nanjing Metro has grown steadily since its first line opened in 2005 into a comprehensive 11-line system serving China's ancient southern capital. The network connects the main high-speed station (Nanjing South) to the city centre, the airport, and the principal historical sites that make the city one of China's most historically rich destinations.

Line 2 is the primary east–west spine, serving Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao), Xinjiekou (the commercial centre), and continuing east to Nanjing East station. Line 1 runs north–south from Nanjing South station through the centre to Nanjing station on the northern edge of the old city. The Purple Mountain area — containing the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum — is served by Line 2's eastern extension.

Nanjing's historical significance is exceptional: as the first capital of the Ming dynasty (before the capital moved to Beijing), the city retains the longest and most complete set of Ming city walls in China — approximately 35 kilometres, largely intact. The Nanjing Massacre Memorial Museum, commemorating the 1937 Japanese occupation atrocity, is a significant and sobering visit accessible on the metro network.
