Kunming Metro
昆明地铁. A six-line network in Yunnan's Spring City, connecting the high-speed rail station, Cuihu Lake, and the bus hubs for onward travel into Yunnan.
About this metro system
Kunming Metro serves the capital of Yunnan province, often called the 'Spring City' for its mild year-round climate at roughly 1,900 metres elevation — Kunming has neither the bitter winters of northern China nor the humid summers of the coastal cities, making it one of China's more comfortable capitals to visit year-round.
The network opened its first line in 2013 and has grown to six lines. Line 6 is the most important for transport connections, running from Kunming South Railway Station (the high-speed hub in Chenggong district) north through the city to the older downtown area. Line 3 connects the main railway station and the bus hubs used for departures to Yunnan's interior destinations — the town of Dali, Lijiang, the Lugu Lake area, and the Xishuangbanna tropical south are all accessed via bus stations served by the metro.
Cuihu (Green Lake) Park in central Kunming, one of the city's most pleasant public spaces, is served by Line 1. The Yunnan Provincial Museum, which holds significant collections of bronze objects from the Dian kingdom and ethnic minority cultural artefacts, is accessible by Line 3. The Stone Forest (Shilin), a UNESCO site of limestone karst formations about 80 kilometres east, requires a separate bus journey from the East Bus Station.
