Hong Kong Metro
香港鐵路(港鐵). The MTR: Hong Kong's benchmark metro, 10 lines, airport express, contactless card entry, and near-perfect reliability across the territory.
About this metro system
Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) is widely regarded as the benchmark urban rail system in Asia and among the best in the world, consistently cited for punctuality, cleanliness, and commercial integration — the MTR Corporation develops property above and around its stations, creating a self-sustaining financial model that has influenced urban rail systems globally.
The network covers both sides of Victoria Harbour: the Hong Kong Island line along the northern shore, the Tsuen Wan, Kwun Tong, and Tuen Ma lines through Kowloon and the New Territories, and cross-harbour connections via the Island and East Rail lines. The Airport Express provides direct, 24-minute links between Hong Kong International Airport and Hong Kong station in Central.
The Octopus card — one of the world's first contactless transit cards when it launched in 1997 — is accepted not only on the MTR but on most buses, ferries, trams, the Peak Tram, and many retail outlets. Foreign visitors can buy an Octopus tourist card at the airport or at customer service windows. Since 2022, the East Rail Line has been extended across the harbour to Admiralty, completing a long-planned cross-harbour connection and significantly improving access from Kowloon and the New Territories to Hong Kong Island.
Foreigner notes
The MTR is one of the world's most foreigner-friendly transit systems: bilingual English/Chinese throughout, clear line maps, octopus card entry, and a reputation for exceptional punctuality (over 99.9% on-time rate). Foreign Visa and Mastercard contactless payment accepted at all gates. Airport Express runs direct to Hong Kong, Kowloon, and Tsing Yi stations.
