Hefei Metro
合肥轨道交通. A six-line network connecting Hefei's high-speed station, university district, and city centre, with easy navigation for visitors.
About this metro system
Hefei Metro began operations in 2016 and has grown to six lines serving Anhui's provincial capital — a city of nine million that has transformed from a relatively quiet administrative centre into a growing technology and education hub over the past two decades.
The network connects Hefei South Railway Station (Line 4) to the city's main commercial and cultural areas, and serves the large university campus district that houses several national-level research institutions. Hefei's universities and the Chinese Academy of Sciences' advanced technology institutes have made the city a significant node in China's semiconductor and quantum computing research ecosystem.
For visitors, Hefei is primarily a gateway city rather than a destination in itself, though the Huizhou-style architecture of the Chenghuang Temple area and the Li Hongzhang Memorial Hall (commemorating the Qing dynasty statesman) are worth seeing. The metro provides convenient access to both. The city's main value for travellers is as a transport hub for accessing Anhui's celebrated landscapes — Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) and the UNESCO-listed Hongcun and Xidi villages — which require bus or taxi connections from the city.
Foreigner notes
English station names on all lines. The network is compact and easy to navigate. Line 4 serves Hefei South Railway Station. The system is less crowded than the megacity metros and generally comfortable.
