Kunming to Vientiane — Laos-China Railway
The Laos-China Railway opened in December 2021, running from Kunming to Vientiane via Boten and Luang Prabang on standard gauge high-speed track. The journey takes approximately 10 hours by direct service.
Route & practicalities
The Laos-China Railway (中老铁路) opened in December 2021 as one of China's Belt and Road Initiative flagship infrastructure projects. The line runs from Kunming in Yunnan south to Boten (the Chinese-Laos border crossing) and continues through Laos to Vientiane, the Laotian capital. The full Kunming-to-Vientiane distance is approximately 1,035 km.
The railway uses standard gauge (1,435 mm) and is designed for speeds of 160 km/h, making it significantly faster than anything previously available in Laos. The line passes through mountainous terrain via extensive tunnels and viaducts.
Border crossing at Boten (磨憨/Boten): the Chinese town of Mohan (磨憨) adjoins the Laotian border town of Boten. Passengers board on the Chinese side, clear Chinese exit procedures, and then proceed through the border station into Laos. Laotian entry procedures are conducted at Boten on the Laotian side. The border procedures are integrated into the rail station experience and generally take 1–2 hours.
Tickets: Chinese segment from Kunming to Mohan (磨憨) is available on 12306.cn. The Laotian segment from Boten to Vientiane is ticketed through Laos Railways (EDL) and available at Laotian stations and through agents. A through-ticket for Kunming to Vientiane requires booking both segments separately at present.
Journey time from Kunming to Vientiane: approximately 10 hours including the border crossing. Kunming to Mohan (Chinese side): 3 hours 45 minutes. Boten to Vientiane (Laotian side): approximately 4 hours.
Station stops in Laos include Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, and Vientiane.
What to expect at the border
Border procedures at Boten are more organised than at many Southeast Asian land crossings — the integrated rail station design helps manage passenger flow. Expect 1–2 hours for exit and entry combined. Currency exchange is available at the border. The Laotian segment of the journey passes through dramatic karst and forested mountain terrain. Air conditioning on the Laotian trains is cold — bring a layer.
