张掖甘州机场 · YZY / ZLZY. The airport for Zhangye — the Silk Road oasis city famous for its Rainbow Mountains (Danxia landforms), the Giant Buddha Temple, and its position between Jiayuguan and Dunhuang.
About this airport
Zhangye Ganzhou Airport serves Zhangye, a Silk Road oasis city in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu province, the narrow passage between the Qilian Mountains to the south and the Gobi Desert to the north that formed the critical trade route between China and Central Asia for two millennia. Zhangye is known internationally primarily for the Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park — a landscape of multicoloured Cretaceous sandstone and conglomerate formations whose mineral composition (iron oxides and trace elements in different strata) erosion has revealed as irregular horizontal bands of red, orange, yellow, grey, green, and purple across the hillsides. These formations, spread over 510 square kilometres, photograph most dramatically at dawn and dusk when oblique light intensifies colour saturation and eliminates shadows that flatten the layers.
High-speed rail from Zhangye West on the Lanzhou-Xinjiang line reaches Lanzhou in approximately 2 hours and Jiayuguan in approximately 40 minutes. Flights connect primarily from Lanzhou, with some routes to Chengdu and other cities [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. The rail connection makes Zhangye a practical stop on the Silk Road rail corridor without requiring a flight.
The Danxia Scenic Area is approximately 40 km east of Zhangye city, accessible by tourist bus or taxi. Peak viewing platforms are connected by boardwalk; the site is managed with shuttle buses between platforms within the park. Summer visitor numbers are high — early booking of accommodation in Zhangye city is advisable for July and August travel.
Zhangye city has the Giant Buddha Temple (Dafo Si), which houses a reclining Buddha of 34.5 metres in fired clay — among the largest clay reclining Buddha figures in China, originally constructed in the Western Xia kingdom (12th century CE) and housed in an elongated hall built to its scale. Marco Polo is recorded as having spent approximately a year in Zhangye (then called Campichu) during his overland journey to the Mongol court. The Zhangye National Wetland Park on the city's southwestern outskirts supports significant populations of wading birds and migratory waterfowl, an unexpected ecological feature within the desert corridor.
The airport terminal is compact with minimal food options and no Priority Pass lounge. Taxis to the city centre take approximately 20 minutes (CNY 30–50); to the Danxia Scenic Area approximately 30–40 minutes (CNY 60–90) [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. Tour operators in the city organise half-day and full-day circuits covering both the coloured rock formations and the city sights; these are efficient for visitors without independent transport. The Danxia site entry ticket and internal shuttle bus (required for most platform access) should be confirmed at the gate.
Accommodation in Zhangye city ranges from budget guesthouses to mid-range business hotels; none are within the Danxia scenic area itself. A night in the city allows the recommended dawn and dusk visits to the formations on separate mornings and evenings, which is the approach giving the most satisfying photographic results.
The airport itself has very limited food beyond basic snacks and no Priority Pass lounge. Connectivity to the Danxia site requires a taxi or pre-arranged tour vehicle. The high-speed rail from Zhangye West station is generally the more convenient arrival method for visitors coming from Lanzhou or Urumqi, as the rail station is closer to the city centre than the airport. The airport is more useful for visitors arriving from Beijing, Chengdu, or cities without direct rail connections to Zhangye.
