锡林浩特机场 · XIL / ZBXH. The gateway airport for Xilinhot — the administrative centre of the Xilingol Grassland, one of China's most intact and representative Mongolian steppe ecosystems.
About this airport
Xilinhot Airport serves the capital of Xilingol League in central Inner Mongolia. The Xilingol grassland has a strong claim to being the most representative of Inner Mongolia's original steppe landscape: it is less impacted by agricultural conversion and overgrazing than many areas in the southern and eastern parts of the autonomous region, and retains the rolling open character of the Mongolian plateau steppe. The grassland here reaches to the horizon in most directions with minimal human infrastructure visible — a landscape character rare in Inner Mongolia's more accessible areas.
Direct flights connect primarily from Beijing (approximately 1.5 hours) and some other Chinese cities [VERIFY: current routes and seasonal schedules — May 2026]. Flight frequency is higher in summer (June–September) to accommodate the grassland tourism season; winter schedules are significantly reduced as most grassland tourism ceases and the steppe becomes bitterly cold. From the airport, a taxi to the city centre takes approximately 20 minutes; the Baiyinxile Grassland Scenic Area is approximately 30 km east.
The grassland experiences available near Xilinhot — yurt (ger) stays with Mongolian herding families, horseback riding across open steppe with trained local guides, and evening meals of boiled lamb, airag (fermented mare's milk), and dairy products — are of high quality given the relative intactness of the landscape. The Mongolian Wild Horse (Przewalski's horse) Breeding Base near the city maintains one of China's largest populations of this globally endangered species and is open to visitors.
The Naadam festival (summer games), traditionally held in July and early August at venues near Xilinhot, includes the classic three Mongolian athletic disciplines: wrestling (bökh), horse racing, and archery. Some Naadam events are organised specifically for tourism; others are genuinely competitive community contests where local herders participate seriously. Both are worth attending but for different reasons. Naadam attendance during the high festival weeks requires accommodation booking weeks to months in advance.
The airport terminal is compact with basic food and no Priority Pass lounge. Taxis to the city take approximately 20 minutes (CNY 30–50) [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. Tour operators in Xilinhot can organise grassland packages including transport to yurt camps, meals, and riding programmes; booking from Xilinhot city is generally cheaper than pre-booking from Beijing. The grassland terrain does not require specialist equipment; however, independent travel to the further grassland areas without a local guide involves genuine navigation challenges.
Winter visits (November to March) are cold at this latitude and altitude — temperatures regularly drop to -30°C on the open steppe — and most grassland tourism infrastructure closes. The city remains functional; winter photography of the snow-covered steppe with livestock attracts a small specialist audience who value the absence of tourist crowds.
The airport's single terminal has basic food including Mongolian dairy products (dried milk curds, butter tea) that are more authentic representations of local food culture than the typical airport standard. Wi-Fi is available [VERIFY: current connectivity — May 2026]. The domestic route network from XIL is limited in frequency; checking schedules carefully and having flexibility in dates is advisable, as weather cancellations occur in winter and capacity is limited in summer peak.
