无锡苏南硕放国际机场 · WUX / ZSWX. A secondary Yangtze Delta airport serving both Wuxi and Suzhou — positioned between the two prosperous lake cities and providing an alternative to congested Shanghai Pudong.
About this airport
Wuxi Sunan Shuofang International Airport is positioned in the flat Yangtze Delta between Wuxi and Suzhou — two of Jiangsu's most prosperous and historically significant cities. The airport serves primarily as an alternative gateway to the Yangtze Delta region for those who find Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao airports over-congested or inconveniently positioned for western Suzhou and Wuxi destinations.
Wuxi is a major industrial city on the northwestern shore of Lake Taihu, one of China's largest freshwater lakes. The city's Lingshan Grand Buddha — an 88-metre bronze seated figure, one of the tallest in China — is its most visited attraction alongside the traditional gardens and canal districts of the Taihu lakeside. The Yuantouzhu (Turtle Head Isle) peninsula into Lake Taihu is a popular lakeside park with cherry blossom in spring. Wuxi is also significant as one of China's leading semiconductor and integrated circuit manufacturing centres.
Suzhou, reachable by taxi or bus from the airport in approximately 30–40 minutes, is renowned for its classical private gardens (nine of which are UNESCO-listed), its 2,500-year-old canal network that still defines the old city's layout, and its silk weaving tradition. The Suzhou Museum, designed by I.M. Pei, is considered one of the finest contemporary museum buildings in China.
Domestic connections from WUX are comprehensive, reaching Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and other major cities. International routes connect to Japan, South Korea, and some Southeast Asian destinations [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. The airport handles substantial air cargo alongside passengers, serving the industrial manufacturing base of the Yangtze Delta.
T2 has a CIP lounge with Priority Pass eligibility (verify before travel). The airport does not have an airside hotel, but several business hotels operate within a short taxi ride. Free terminal Wi-Fi is available throughout; domestic SIM cards provide reliable 4G/5G coverage in the terminal [VERIFY: current connectivity — May 2026].
The Airport Express Bus to the city is approximately CNY 20–30 and runs regularly. Taxi rides to central Wuxi take approximately 40 minutes (CNY 60–90); to central Suzhou approximately the same distance and fare in the opposite direction. Private car services arranged through apps (DiDi) are a practical alternative for those with Chinese mobile payment capability.
For travellers visiting both Wuxi and Suzhou on the same trip, staying in Suzhou (more heritage concentration, better old-town accommodation) and using Suzhou South high-speed station for onward travel is generally the recommended approach. WUX airport is most useful when direct domestic routing makes it the logical arriving or departing airport, rather than a routing compromise through Shanghai.
The combined Wuxi-Suzhou economic zone is one of the wealthiest in China by per-capita income, which is reflected in the quality of hotel and restaurant options: both cities have well-developed hospitality infrastructure across all price ranges. Business travel is the dominant use case for WUX, and the airport's facilities reflect this — efficient processing, business-oriented food options (Wuxi pork ribs, local snacks alongside national brands), and adequate connectivity rather than resort-style amenities. For leisure visitors, staying in Suzhou's old town (within the canal ring) and using the airport as an arrival point for a Taihu lake circuit gives the most practical arrangement.
