潍坊南苑机场 · WEF / ZSWF. A small regional airport serving Weifang, the Kite Capital of the World, in Shandong.
About this airport
Weifang Nanyuan Airport is a small regional facility serving Weifang in central Shandong province. Weifang has a single internationally recognised cultural claim: it is the self-declared Kite Capital of the World, and has promoted this identity through the annual International Kite Festival held each April. Kite-making has been a craft tradition here since the Song dynasty, and what is claimed to be the world's largest kite museum is located in the city. Beyond the kite culture, Weifang is a mid-sized manufacturing city with limited general tourism infrastructure.
Ground transport from WEF to Weifang city centre is primarily by taxi (approximately 20 minutes, CNY 30–50). [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. No metro connection exists. The airport is compact and taxi access from the arrivals exit is straightforward. Bus services may also be available. [VERIFY: current options — May 2026].
Routes from WEF are limited — primarily to Beijing, Shanghai, and southern Chinese destinations. [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. The airport is small and functional. Most travellers reaching Weifang arrive by road or rail from the wider Shandong network rather than by air; the airport primarily serves those connecting from distant cities with no convenient rail link.
The April Kite Festival is the period when visiting WEF makes the most sense for international visitors. The Weifang International Kite Festival, usually held in mid-to-late April, draws participants from over 30 countries. The flying ground on the city outskirts hosts an extraordinary display ranging from traditional hand-painted paper-and-bamboo constructions — some representing Weifang's traditional bird, fish, and centipede designs — to massive modern inflatable kites measuring tens of metres. The Weifang Kite Museum in the city has a permanent collection of kites from China and internationally. [VERIFY: current festival dates and museum hours — May 2026].
Outside the festival, Weifang's appeal to international visitors is limited. The city's industrial base in manufacturing and petrochemicals dominates the economy. The surrounding Shandong coast — the Laoshan Mountain coastal scenic area near Qingdao, or the Rizhao beaches — is accessible by rail for those who want coastal scenery.
Facilities at the terminal are minimal: basic food counter, limited seating, taxi access outside. No Priority Pass lounge. Wi-Fi is available with standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
