天津滨海国际机场 · TSN / ZBTJ. Tianjin's international airport, close to Beijing and served by metro, with a 144-hour transit visa exemption and direct access to one of China's oldest port cities.
About this airport
Tianjin Binhai International Airport serves Tianjin, one of China's four direct-controlled municipalities and the country's fifth-largest city by population, located about 120 kilometres southeast of central Beijing. The airport is in the Dongli district, some 13 kilometres from Tianjin Railway Station. Terminal 2 is the primary building for most passengers; T1 handles domestic overflow traffic.
Metro Line 2 connects the airport to Tianjin Railway Station in approximately 45 minutes, with a fare of approximately CNY 6. [VERIFY: current fare — May 2026]. From Tianjin Railway Station the metro network extends to all main areas of the city. Taxis to the city centre cost approximately CNY 60–90. High-speed trains between Tianjin and Beijing South Station run every few minutes and take about 30 minutes — meaning that Tianjin airport effectively serves the broader Beijing-Tianjin metropolitan area, and passengers flying into TSN for a Beijing visit will find the rail connection fast and frequent.
International routes at TSN primarily connect to Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and Russia. Domestic coverage is comprehensive for a city of Tianjin's size. The airport's lower slot costs compared to Beijing Capital have historically attracted budget and charter operators, meaning fares between TSN and certain destinations can be meaningfully cheaper than comparable Beijing routes.
Tianjin's appeal for visitors lies primarily in its exceptionally well-preserved treaty-port architecture: the former British, French, German, Italian, Japanese, American, Russian, and Belgian concession areas contain intact late-19th and early-20th century streetscapes unlike anything in Beijing or Shanghai. The Italian Quarter (意大利风情区, Yì Dàlì Fēnqíng Qū) is almost entirely intact and pedestrianised, with original piazzas, campaniles, and Art Nouveau buildings. The 144-hour TWOV gives eligible passengers ample time to explore these districts alongside the Ancient Culture Street, Yangliuqing temple fair culture, and Tianjin's distinctive local food culture (jianbing guozi, mahua fried dough twists, and the city's goubuli baozi).
Immigration at TSN processes through T2's international section. The standard fingerprint and biometric procedure applies. Wait times are typically 15–30 minutes for off-peak international arrivals. [VERIFY: current typical wait times — May 2026]. SIM counters from China Mobile and China Unicom are in the arrivals hall.
Scams at TSN follow the standard pattern. The official taxi rank is outside T2 arrivals and is clearly signed. The airport's relatively modest international volumes mean unlicensed operator pressure is lower than at Beijing or Shanghai.
Priority Pass access is through the Air China Lounge in T2. Standard Chinese regional quality: hot food, beverages, adequate seating.
Wi-Fi requires the standard passport-scan or phone-number verification. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
Accessibility at TSN is adequate: lifts, ramps, and tactile paving are present. Wheelchair assistance is available through your airline. Metro Line 2 platforms are accessible by lift.
Tianjin's treaty-port architecture is best explored on foot. The five main former concession areas — the Italian Quarter, the former British Concession (now Jiefang Road financial area), the former French Concession (Laoximen area), and the remaining German and Japanese streetscapes — are within a compact zone of the old city south of the central railway station. A half-day walking circuit from the Astor Hotel (one of China's oldest hotels, dating from the 1863 British concession period) through the Italian Quarter and the Tianjin Museum covers the key sites. The 144-hour TWOV gives comfortable time for this circuit and a day trip to one of the Great Wall sections (Huanghuacheng water-filled Great Wall, accessible in approximately 2 hours, is the nearest quality example).
