成都天府国际机场 · TFU / ZUTF. Chengdu's new flagship airport 50 km south of the city, designed as the future primary hub for western China's busiest aviation market.
About this airport
Chengdu Tianfu International Airport opened in June 2021 after a construction period of approximately four years. The project was conceived as both an aviation facility and a piece of regional economic planning: the airport anchors Tianfu New Area, a government-designated development zone south of Chengdu, intended to attract high-tech industries and financial services. The long-term plan calls for TFU to handle up to 90 million passengers per year, which at that scale would place it among the largest airports in the world. As of 2026 the airport is in a growth phase, with routes transferring progressively from the older Shuangliu (CTU) airport to TFU.
The two terminals — T1 and T2 — are large, modern buildings with high ceilings, good natural light, and purpose-designed food and retail zones. The architecture is functional without being distinctive; the emphasis was on capacity and operational efficiency rather than architectural signature. An airside shuttle connects T1 and T2 for connecting passengers. Wayfinding is clear in English and Chinese. The surrounding airport precinct is still under development as of 2026; the hotel and commercial infrastructure that mature airport districts accumulate over decades is not yet fully established.
The fundamental practical reality of TFU is its distance from the city. The airport sits approximately 50 kilometres south of central Chengdu — further than almost any comparable Chinese airport from its city centre. Metro Lines 18 and 13 connect the airport to the city network; the journey to central Chengdu (Chunxi Road, Tianfu Square area) takes approximately 50–60 minutes. For passengers with 144-hour TWOV clearance wanting to visit Chengdu, the round trip from TFU to a central city destination and back consumes 2–2.5 hours. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding — the primary tourist draw — requires a metro change and takes over an hour from TFU each way.
Immigration at TFU processes international arrivals through the designated international piers of T1. The standard fingerprint and biometric procedure applies. As a newer airport, the immigration hall is well-designed with adequate booth capacity for current volumes. Wait times are typically 20–40 minutes during busy international banks; the airport's lower current international volume compared to CTU means processing is often faster in practice. [VERIFY: current typical wait times — May 2026]. E-channel lanes for residence permit holders are available.
SIM counters from China Mobile and China Unicom are in the T1 arrivals area. Standard tourist data packages are available. The process is the same as at other major airports. Bring your passport.
Metro Line 18 connects TFU to Jianshan South station (interchange with Line 6) and continues into the city network. Metro Line 13 also serves the airport for northern city destinations. The fare from TFU to central Chengdu stations is approximately CNY 15–25 depending on destination. [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. Taxis from TFU to the city centre cost approximately CNY 120–180 and take 60–90 minutes under light traffic. Airport buses also serve several city destinations for approximately CNY 20–40. The distance means that DiDi rideshare is often cost-competitive with taxis; the app pickup zone is designated within the airport complex.
Scams at TFU arrivals follow the standard pattern. The official taxi rank is outside the arrivals exit and clearly signed. Unofficial drivers occasionally work the arrivals area; decline and proceed to the official queue.
Priority Pass access at TFU is through the Air China Lounge in T1 and the China Eastern Lounge in T1. The Sichuan Airlines Phoenix Lounge in T2 serves Sichuan Airlines passengers. Lounge quality is higher than the Chinese average by virtue of the new construction: better-specified food options, more comfortable seating, and well-equipped shower suites. During route transfer periods, lounge traffic can be uneven.
Wi-Fi at TFU requires the passport-scan or phone-number verification process. T1 and T2's newer infrastructure supports good connection speeds. Chinese internet restrictions apply on the domestic network.
Food in the terminals includes a modern food court with Sichuan hot pot counters, cold noodle bars, roast duck stalls, and major international chains. As a newer airport, the food zones are purpose-designed and spacious. Prices are airport-level (30–50% above city equivalents). Late-night coverage is maintained by the standard always-open fast food counters.
Smoking rooms are designated airside in both terminals; check the terminal maps for current locations.
Accessibility at TFU is consistent with new construction standards: lifts at all key transitions, tactile paving throughout, ramps at all entrances, accessible toilet facilities at regular intervals. Wheelchair assistance is available through your airline. Metro Lines 18 and 13 stations are accessible by lift. The airport's design emphasises horizontal movement over vertical, which reduces complexity for passengers with mobility limitations.
Terminals
Two terminals: T1 and T2, connected by an airside shuttle. T1 is the primary terminal. A planned third terminal will eventually be added. Metro Line 18 and Line 13 connect the airport to Chengdu's city network.
Transit to the city
Metro Line 18 connects TFU to Jianshan South station and continues to Tianfu New Area. The journey to central Chengdu (Chunxi Road area) takes about 50–60 minutes (CNY 15–25). Taxis to the city centre cost CNY 120–180 and take 60–90 minutes. The airport is significantly further from central Chengdu than Shuangliu.

Sleep options
Airport precinct hotels were still developing as of 2026. The Marriott Chengdu Tianfu Airport is the flagship option. The distance from the city centre makes TFU less suitable for short transit excursions.
Transit visa-free rules
Chengdu Tianfu is covered by the same 144-hour TWOV scheme as CTU. Both airports share the Sichuan province transit zone. Confirm which airport your connecting flights use before relying on a transit stay.
