腾冲腾冲机场 · TCZ / ZUTC. A small Yunnan airport serving Tengchong — an extraordinary geothermal and volcanic landscape near the Myanmar border, with jade markets, World War II cemeteries, and hot spring resorts.
About this airport
Tengchong Tuofeng Airport serves Tengchong, a county-level city in the extreme west of Yunnan province near the border with Myanmar. Tengchong's geological character is dominated by its location on the boundary of two tectonic plates: the city has 97 volcanoes (most dormant but some hydrothermally active) within the county and 88 hot spring groups. The Tengchong Volcanic and Geothermal National Park includes still-active fumaroles, boiling mud pools at Rehai (Hot Sea), and impressive eruption landscape remnants — lava fields and volcanic cones — from historical events. The Heshun hot spring resort clusters are less dramatic than Rehai but more accessible for casual visitors.
Beyond its geological character, Tengchong has significant historical importance as a node on the western Silk Road branch through Burma to India. A substantial jade trading community developed from Burmese jade brought overland via the old Burma Road; the local jade market remains one of the largest in Yunnan for rough jade, worked pieces, and jade-carving demonstrations. The quality and pricing varies considerably — basic knowledge of jade evaluation is useful.
World War II left a lasting mark on Tengchong: the Battle of Tengchong (August–September 1944) was one of the most significant engagements in the China-Burma-India Theatre, involving Chinese Expeditionary Force and American liaison officers against Japanese positions entrenched in the town. A well-maintained national cemetery and the National Expeditionary Force Museum in Heshun commemorate the campaign with considerable historical seriousness.
Flights connect primarily from Kunming (approximately 1 hour) and some other domestic cities [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. The airport makes Tengchong accessible without the very long road journey from Dali (approximately 5 hours) or Baoshan (approximately 2.5 hours). The Heshun ancient town — a remarkably intact Qing and Republican-era village of the huaqiao (Overseas Chinese) community, with cobblestone streets, clan ancestral halls, a public library founded in 1928, and distinctive southern Yunnan wooden residential architecture — is 4 km from the city centre and accessible by taxi or cycle.
The airport itself is a single-terminal facility with limited food options and no Priority Pass lounge. Shuttle buses to Tengchong city take approximately 20 minutes (CNY 15); taxis cost approximately CNY 30–50 [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. Most accommodation options are in the city centre or near the Heshun area, from which excursions to the volcano park, hot springs, and jade market are most efficiently made.
Tengchong's hot spring culture is commercially developed: the Rehai scenic area (admission required) concentrates the most dramatic geothermal activity — the Dagu Boiling Pool (97°C surface temperature) and associated mud fumaroles are the headline features — while the Beihai Wetland (a floating marsh formed on a volcanic lava field, where vegetation roots through the compacted volcanic debris) provides an unusual ecological contrast to the bare rock landscape of the volcano park. Both are within 20 km of the city and accessible by taxi or tour arrangement. Early mornings at Rehai, before organised groups arrive, give the most atmospheric experience of the steam and boiling pools.
Tengchong sits at 1,654 m altitude, which keeps temperatures comfortable even in summer relative to lowland Yunnan. The trade route history through the Gaoligong Mountain range — the China–Burma section of the historic Tea Horse Road and the wartime Burma Road — is documented in the Tengchong Bura trade route cultural landscape.
