青岛胶东国际机场 · TAO / ZSQD. Qingdao's new Jiaodong airport replaced Liuting in 2021, with metro access and 72-hour transit visa exemption for qualifying routes.
About this airport
Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport opened in August 2021, replacing the old Liuting airport that had served the city since the early post-war period. Liuting was a compact facility close to the city centre; it had served its purpose but was constrained by surrounding development and increasingly unable to handle Qingdao's growing passenger volumes. Jiaodong is located roughly 40 kilometres north of the old city, on a site large enough for a full multi-runway build-out. The move mirrors a broader pattern in China's aviation development: replacing city-adjacent airports with larger facilities on semi-rural land, at the cost of longer surface transfer times.
The new terminal is a single integrated building with a distinctive wave-roof profile inspired by the sea. Natural light fills the main hall through a glazed ceiling. Wayfinding is clear, with English signage throughout. The building was designed for eventual expansion; as of 2026 the principal terminal handles both domestic and international traffic with no inter-terminal transfers required.
Qingdao is known internationally for Tsingtao beer, brewed here since 1903 under the German concession's establishment of a brewery using local spring water and European methods. The city's German colonial legacy is visible in the former concession quarter: Gothic churches, Bavarian-style civic buildings, and terracotta-tiled townhouses survive along the hillside streets of Shinan district. The seafront promenade, Zhanqiao pier, and the beaches make Qingdao one of China's most visited coastal destinations in summer. In winter, Shandong's brisk climate means the crowds thin and the crab and oyster season is at its peak.
Immigration at TAO processes through a standard biometric check-in. The new terminal has adequate booth capacity for the current route schedule. Expected wait times for international arrivals are 15–35 minutes outside of peak summer periods. [VERIFY: current typical wait times — May 2026]. July and August see significantly higher volumes with leisure tourists; allow extra processing time. The e-channel for residence permit holders is available.
SIM counters from China Mobile and China Unicom are in the arrivals hall. The standard tourist data packages are available. Bring your passport. Jiaodong's arrivals hall is straightforward to navigate — the counters are clearly located near the arrivals exit.
Metro Line 8 connects Jiaodong Airport to Qingdao North Railway Station in approximately 40 minutes and costs approximately CNY 15. [VERIFY: current fare — May 2026]. Qingdao North is a high-speed rail station with connections to Jinan (about 90 minutes), Beijing (about 3 hours), and the broader national network. From Qingdao North, a further metro segment to the old city (Taidong, Zhanqiao area) takes another 15–20 minutes. Total journey time from the airport to the German Quarter or the pier: roughly 65–80 minutes. Taxis from Jiaodong to the old city area cost approximately CNY 120–160 and take a similar time without traffic.
The greater distance from the city compared to the old Liuting airport is the primary practical adjustment for visitors. If you are arriving for a short visit, the metro is both cheaper and more predictable than a taxi. Rideshare (DiDi) is available from designated airport pickup zones.
The standard unlicensed taxi approach applies at Jiaodong arrivals. The official taxi rank is outside the arrivals exit and is clearly marked and marshalled. Do not accept transport offers inside the terminal. In peak summer periods, the taxi queue can be long; the metro is the reliable alternative.
Priority Pass access at TAO is available through the Haicheng Lounge, which accepts Priority Pass and select credit cards. [VERIFY: current Priority Pass access — May 2026]. The Qingdao Airlines First Class Lounge is for qualifying Qingdao Airlines passengers. Lounge quality is standard regional Chinese level: hot food, beverages, comfortable seating. The facilities are newer than average by virtue of the terminal's recent construction.
Wi-Fi at the Jiaodong terminal follows the standard passport-scan verification process. Connection speeds in the new building are good. Chinese internet restrictions apply on the domestic network; configure your VPN before landing.
Food in the terminal includes Shandong seafood options — Qingdao-style clams, sea cucumber dishes, and crab stalls in season — alongside standard Chinese and international fast food. The seafood at the airport is considerably more expensive than at the city's coastal restaurants; treat it as a last-resort option rather than a destination meal. The food court on level 3 is the main eating area. Prices are airport-level (30–50% above city).
Smoking rooms are designated airside; check the terminal map. No smoking is permitted in the main concourses or departures halls. Outside the building, marked zones are near the entrances.
Accessibility provision at Jiaodong reflects its recent construction: lifts at all key transitions, tactile paving throughout, ramps at all entrances, and accessible toilet facilities at regular intervals. Wheelchair assistance is available through your airline. The Metro Line 8 station is accessible by lift. The new terminal's single-building layout reduces the number of accessible transfer challenges compared to multi-terminal airports.
