三亚凤凰国际机场 · SYX / ZJSY. Gateway to China's tropical resort island, Sanya's airport serves Hainan's beach and golf tourism with a 30-day island-wide visa-free scheme for many nationalities.
About this airport
Sanya Phoenix International Airport serves China's southernmost major city, located at the southern tip of Hainan Island — the country's only tropical province — approximately 1,200 kilometres south of Hong Kong. Sanya has developed over the past two decades into China's primary domestic beach resort destination, with a climate that allows year-round swimming, and a collection of international-branded resort hotels along Sanya Bay, Yalong Bay, and the newer Haitang Bay that is largely without equivalent elsewhere on the mainland.
Terminal 1 is the older building, handling domestic overflow. Terminal 2, opened in 2015, is the main terminal for most passengers, including those on the growing number of international leisure routes. Both terminals are on the same site. A third terminal expansion was at the planning and approval stage as of 2026, driven by the sustained growth in Hainan's inbound tourism.
Hainan Island has a distinct administrative status in China's development strategy. The central government has designated Hainan as a free trade zone and piloted a 30-day visa-free entry scheme for nationals of a substantial number of countries for tourism, business, and transit purposes. This is separate from and more generous than the mainland TWOV schemes: eligible visitors can enter at Sanya, spend up to 30 days on the island, and depart without any prior visa application. The scheme covers the entire island, not just Sanya. This makes SYX one of the easiest Chinese airports to enter from a documentation standpoint for many nationalities. [VERIFY: current nationality list for Hainan visa-free — May 2026].
Hainan cuisine is distinct from the Cantonese and Fujianese food typical of southern China. The most famous dish is Wenchang chicken — poached free-range chicken served with rice cooked in chicken stock, accompanied by three dipping sauces — which has spread throughout Southeast Asia under the name Hainanese chicken rice. Coconut milk features prominently in desserts and some savoury preparations. Fresh seafood, tropical fruits (mango, dragon fruit, durian, papaya), and Hainan coffee (a robust preparation influenced by the island's legacy of Vietnamese and overseas Chinese communities) are widely available.
Immigration at SYX processes through T2's international section. The fingerprint and biometric procedure applies for non-visa-free arrivals; for Hainan visa-free entries, the process is streamlined. Wait times for international arrivals are typically 15–30 minutes during leisure charter arrivals. [VERIFY: current typical wait times — May 2026]. The seasonal nature of some international charter routes means that immigration is sometimes staffed for peak arrivals and then quieter between banks.
SIM counters from China Mobile and China Unicom are in the arrivals hall. Standard tourist data packages are available. The same Chinese internet restrictions apply on the mainland network; the Hainan free trade zone status does not extend to internet access rules.
Transport from SYX to the resort areas is straightforward given the city's compact geography. Taxis to Sanya Bay (the closest major resort area) cost approximately CNY 30–50 and take 15–20 minutes. Yalong Bay, the furthest major resort area, is approximately CNY 60–80 and 30–40 minutes. [VERIFY: current taxi fares — May 2026]. DiDi rideshare is widely used in Sanya and is generally the most cost-effective option. Airport bus services run to the city centre and main resort areas. Most luxury hotels operate shuttle services with advance booking.
Scams at SYX focus on the tourist economy: unlicensed taxis offering fixed prices significantly above metered rates, seafood restaurant touts near the resort areas who operate on commission, and tourist-oriented shops near the beaches. At the airport itself, the official taxi rank is outside the arrivals exits and is clearly signed. The higher-than-average tourist concentration means more persistent solicitation at the airport than at a business-focused airport, but the standard decline-and-proceed-to-official-rank approach works.
Priority Pass access at SYX is through the Hainan Airlines Lounge and China Southern Lounge in T2, both of which accept Priority Pass. Lounge quality is standard Chinese regional level with some local food options including tropical fruit and coconut-based items. The lounges are adequate for a pre-departure wait.
Wi-Fi at SYX follows the standard passport-scan or phone-number verification process. T2's connection speeds are reasonable. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
Food in T2 includes Hainan specialities: Wenchang chicken rice, coconut desserts, fresh tropical fruit stands, and various local snacks alongside standard Chinese fast food chains. The fresh mango and pineapple counters are worth a stop; Hainan produces some of the best tropical fruit in China. Prices are airport-elevated but the tropical fruit is priced more reasonably than the cooked food options.
Smoking rooms are designated airside in T2. No smoking is permitted in the main concourses or arrivals/departures halls. The outdoor areas near the terminal entrances have designated smoking zones.
Accessibility at SYX is adequate for the current terminal configuration: lifts, ramps, tactile paving, and accessible toilets are present. Wheelchair assistance is available through your airline. Resort hotel shuttles vary in accessibility; request accessible vehicles when booking. The compact geography of Sanya, with short distances between the airport and most accommodation, is an advantage for passengers with mobility limitations.
Terminals
Two terminals: T1 (older, domestic) and T2 (opened 2015, handles domestic and some international). Both terminals are at the same site. A third terminal expansion was in planning as of 2026 to handle growing leisure tourism traffic.
Transit to the city
Taxis from SYX to Sanya Bay or Dadonghai beach resort areas cost approximately CNY 30–60 and take 15–30 minutes. Rideshare (DiDi) is widely used in Sanya. Airport bus services run to the city centre and main resort areas. The city is compact enough that most resort hotels are under 30 minutes from the airport.
Priority Pass lounges
Food
T2 has a food court with Hainan specialities including Wenchang chicken rice, coconut-based desserts, and fresh seafood stalls alongside standard Chinese and international chains. The tropical fruit stands — fresh mango, pineapple, and dragon fruit — are worth noting as genuinely local products.
Sleep options
No airside hotel. Sanya Bay and Haitang Bay have extensive luxury resort hotels, all 20–45 minutes from the airport by taxi. Sanya is one of China's main beach resort destinations.
Transit visa-free rules
Sanya participates in Hainan province's visa-free policy. Hainan operates a separate 30-day visa-free scheme for nationals of many countries for tourism purposes, distinct from the mainland TWOV scheme. This is one of the most generous regional visa-free arrangements in China and covers the entire island.
