沈阳桃仙国际机场 · SHE / ZYTX. Shenyang's main airport, gateway to Liaoning province and the industrial northeast, with metro access and 72-hour transit exemption.
About this airport
Shenyang Taoxian International Airport serves Liaoning's provincial capital, historically significant as the seat of the early Qing (Manchu) dynasty before the conquest of Beijing. The Mukden Palace — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is a rare example of Manchu palace architecture and distinct from the later Beijing style.
The airport lies about 20 kilometres south of the city centre and is primarily a domestic hub, though it maintains international services to Japan, South Korea, Russia, and Southeast Asia. Air China and Shenyang-based carriers dominate the route map.
Terminal 2 is functional and reasonably modern. The metro connection opened in 2015 and significantly improved the transfer experience. Shenyang is the largest city in China's old industrial northeast — the region known as dongbei — and the airport reflects the area's mix of heavy industry and growing service economy. For travellers interested in Manchu history, Qing-era architecture, or the distinctive dongbei cuisine characterised by hearty braised dishes and cold-weather staples, Shenyang makes a worthwhile layover if the TWOV conditions are met.
Terminals
Two terminals: T1 (domestic) and T2 (opened 2013, handles domestic and international). T2 is the main terminal for most passengers.
Transit to the city
Metro Line 2 connects T2 to the city centre (Shenyang Railway Station area) in approximately 30 minutes (CNY 5). Taxis cost roughly CNY 60–90.
Priority Pass lounges
Food
T2 has a food court with dongbei (northeastern Chinese) cuisine options including guotie, stewed pork dishes, and cold noodle stalls alongside standard fast food.
Sleep options
No airside hotel. Several business hotels are located near the airport precinct, accessible by taxi.
Transit visa-free rules
Shenyang holds a 72-hour TWOV for eligible nationalities on qualifying routes. Transit passengers must hold a confirmed onward ticket and cannot leave Liaoning province.
