日喀则和平机场 · RKZ / ZURK. The high-altitude airport serving Shigatse — Tibet's second city, home to the Tashilhunpo Monastery and base for visits toward Everest Base Camp and the Nepal border.
About this airport
Shigatse Peace Airport (Shigatse Heping Jichang) is a civilian-military dual-use facility at approximately 3,782 metres elevation in the Shigatse district of Tibet Autonomous Region — making it one of the highest-altitude civilian airports in regular passenger service. The altitude is more than 200 metres higher than Lhasa's Gonggar Airport and significantly above the threshold at which altitude sickness symptoms become likely for unacclimatised passengers. Do not plan strenuous activity for the first 24–48 hours after arrival in Shigatse.
Shigatse (gZhis-ka-rtse in Tibetan, 'Happy Manor') is Tibet's second city and has historically been the political and religious centre of the Tsang region. The Tashilhunpo Monastery — founded in 1447 by Gendun Drup (the First Dalai Lama) — is the city's defining institution and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. The monastery complex houses approximately 600 monks and contains a series of major halls, including the Tomb of the Fourth Panchen Lama and the Maitreya Chapel, which holds one of the world's largest gilded statues at 26 metres. The monastery remains active and is open to visitors, with monks conducting daily rituals that can be observed respectfully.
Tibet Travel Permit requirements apply to most foreign nationals visiting this airport. This permit is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau and must be arranged through a registered Tibet travel agency prior to travel. Individual independent travel is not permitted for most foreign nationalities in Tibet — tour group or semi-group arrangements are required. Additional Alien Travel Permits (separately issued) are required for travel to the Nepal border area, Everest Base Camp, Rongbuk Monastery, and other restricted zones west of Shigatse. Confirm current requirements carefully before booking, as these change [VERIFY: current permit requirements — May 2026].
Flights connect from Lhasa's Gonggar Airport (approximately 30 minutes) and some direct routes from Chengdu [VERIFY: current routes and schedule — May 2026]. The Lhasa-to-Shigatse road via the Friendship Highway takes approximately 5–6 hours and passes through impressive plateau landscape.
The Friendship Highway continues southwest from Shigatse toward Nepal: Sakya Monastery (approximately 140 km west, an imposing fortress-monastery of the Sakyapa sect with enormous perimeter walls enclosing one of Tibet's most important collections of rare Tibetan texts and Tangkas) lies en route, and Everest Base Camp (the Chinese side, Rongbuk approach, 5,200 m) is approximately 250 km southwest and requires a full day's driving from Shigatse. The Rongbuk Monastery near the base camp is the highest-altitude monastery in the world; the north face of Everest is visible on clear days from the base camp area.
The airport's terminal is compact and basic, with very limited food at altitude. The altitude of 3,782 m means even arriving from Lhasa (3,600 m) represents a slight increase; arriving from sea-level cities is more significant. The same acclimatisation cautions that apply throughout the Tibet Autonomous Region apply here: take it slowly on arrival, avoid exertion, drink water, and remain alert for altitude sickness symptoms. No airside hotel; hotels in Shigatse city are the accommodation base for most visitors.
Arriving at RKZ allows visitors to begin touring the Shigatse area without the transit time through Lhasa — most usefully for those whose Tibetan itinerary includes the southwestern counties and Nepal border area more than central Lhasa.
