盘锦机场 · PJX / ZYPJ. A small Liaoning airport serving Panjin, gateway to the Red Beach wetlands — a seasonal Suaeda succulence phenomenon that turns the coastal tidal flats vivid scarlet in autumn.
About this airport
Panjin Airport is a small regional facility serving the coastal city of Panjin in Liaoning province. The airport's primary purpose for tourism is providing direct access to the Red Beach (Hong Haitai) — a tidal flat wetland ecosystem dominated by Suaeda salsa, a salt-tolerant succulent plant that turns from green to vivid scarlet-red in September and October, creating one of China's most photographed natural phenomena. The red colouration develops as the plant accumulates betacyanin pigments in response to the saline, high-light environment of the Bohai Bay coastal flat.
Routes from PJX are limited, with connections primarily to Beijing and some southern Chinese cities, particularly during the autumn peak season [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. Most visitors to Panjin arrive via Shenyang by high-speed rail (approximately 40 minutes) — the airport is used primarily by those coming from more distant cities for whom a direct flight is more convenient. Rail from Shenyang on the Shenyang-Panjin-Dalian line is the standard approach.
From the airport, the Red Beach scenic area is approximately 30 km south of Panjin city by taxi or tourist bus. The optimal viewing period for the red colour — when Suaeda is at peak saturation and has not yet been flattened by autumn winds — is typically late September to early October. Weekday visits in this window are strongly preferable; weekend boardwalk congestion can significantly diminish the experience. Early morning arrival before the tour buses gives the best conditions.
The Liaohe River Delta wetland that encompasses the Red Beach is a nationally significant migratory bird habitat. Red-crowned cranes (one of the world's most endangered cranes, with fewer than 3,000 individuals) use the area during spring (April–May) and autumn (October–November) migrations. The combination of Red Beach colour and crane observation in early October is the optimal combined experience. The adjacent reed marshes — the Liaohe Delta has one of China's largest reed cultivation areas — support populations of reed buntings, eastern marsh harriers, and other wetland species throughout the season.
The airport terminal is minimal: basic counter food, no lounge, and limited services. Taxis and pre-booked transfers to the Red Beach are the primary ground transport option; the city is approximately 30 km from the scenic area, making a half-day visit feasible if combined with an early arrival.
The city of Panjin itself is an oil production centre (the Liaohe Oilfield is one of China's largest onshore fields) with limited heritage tourism beyond the wetland. The city's local cuisine reflects its coastal and riverine character: Panjin river crab (Panjin da zha xie) is among the most prized freshwater crab varieties in northeastern China, available from September to November — overlapping with the Red Beach autumn colour season — making October one of the best months to visit if both the landscape and the food culture are motivations. The crab is typically prepared steamed, with vinegar and ginger dipping sauce, in the northeastern seafood tradition.
Practical airport notes: flights from PJX are limited in frequency; connecting through Shenyang (SHE) by high-speed rail and departing from there is often more reliable for travel to cities beyond Beijing. Check the seasonal schedule variation carefully, as autumn (September–October) sees higher frequencies than other periods.
