漠河古莲机场 · OHE / ZMUB. The northernmost airport in China, gateway to Mohe — the country's coldest and most northerly inhabited settlement on the Russian border.
About this airport
Mohe Gulian Airport is the northernmost commercial airport in China, serving Mohe — the northernmost county in mainland China, located at 53°N latitude in the Greater Khingan mountain range on the Russian border. The airport enables access to a destination that is otherwise extraordinarily remote: a road journey from Harbin takes approximately 16 hours, and rail access requires a multi-day journey with changes. Flying is the practical choice for most visitors.
Ground transport from OHE to Mohe town is by taxi. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes and costs approximately CNY 50–80. [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. There is no public bus service between the airport and the town; taxis from the rank outside arrivals are the standard option. The official taxi rank is clearly signed outside the terminal exit. Arrange transport to the North Pole Village (Beiji Cun, an additional 30 km north of the town) through your accommodation, as ad-hoc taxis for this stretch can be scarce.
Flights connect primarily to Harbin, with some seasonal routes to Shenyang, Beijing, and other cities during the winter tourism peak and summer white-night season. [VERIFY: current routes and seasonal schedules — May 2026]. Winter operations require significant cold-weather aircraft and ground equipment management; delays due to ice, snowfall, and extreme temperature are more common than at temperate-climate airports. Build schedule flexibility into any Mohe itinerary.
Mohe's attractions are defined by its extreme northern latitude. Winter temperatures routinely reach −40°C, making it one of the coldest inhabited places in China. The cold is itself the attraction: winter tourism focuses on the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) viewing on clear nights between October and March, the dramatic taiga forest winter landscapes, and the town's cold-weather culture. Visitors should arrive dressed for extreme cold — airport transfer on a winter night at −30°C or below requires proper insulation from the moment you leave the aircraft.
In summer, Mohe offers white nights — near-round-the-clock daylight around the summer solstice — and access to the Heilongjiang (Amur) River border with Russia at the North Pole Village (Beiji Cun, 北极村). The village is the northernmost permanent settlement in China and has become a tourism destination in its own right, with guesthouses, a riverside boardwalk, and the ability to look across the river into Russia.
Facilities at OHE are minimal: a small terminal with basic food counter service, limited seating, and taxi access outside. No Priority Pass lounge. SIM coverage in the Mohe region uses China Mobile; other operators have inconsistent signal in the far north. Load data before arriving. Wi-Fi is available at the airport with standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
Accessibility at OHE is basic. The compact terminal has standard facilities but limited consistent provision for passengers with mobility limitations. Wheelchair assistance should be arranged through your airline in advance of travel.
