南宁吴圩国际机场 · NNG / ZGNN. The gateway to Guangxi's capital — the Zhuang minority cultural centre, gateway to Guilin, Zuojiang rock art (UNESCO), and the Vietnam border crossing at Friendship Pass.
About this airport
Nanning Wuxu International Airport serves Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Nanning's position in subtropical southern China, 160 km from the Vietnamese border, gives it a character distinct from other Chinese provincial capitals: the climate is warm and wet year-round, the vegetation lush, and the cultural and commercial connections with Vietnam immediate and continuous. The Zhuang people — China's largest ethnic minority nationality, with approximately 18 million members mostly in Guangxi — give the autonomous region its official name and maintain a distinct language (closely related to Thai and Lao), music tradition, and festival calendar.
The Friendship Pass (Youyi Guan) border crossing at Pingxiang, 170 km south of Nanning by high-speed rail (approximately 1.5 hours), is the most frequently used land border crossing between China and Vietnam. The rail connection from Nanning crosses into Vietnam at the border, with trains continuing to Hanoi. It is a practical option for overland travel between China and northern Vietnam.
The Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art — a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2016) depicting Zhuang ritual ceremonies in red ochre on riverside cliff faces, with some paintings dating back 2,000 years — is approximately 160 km west of Nanning near Chongzuo. The most impressive panel faces the river from a height, and the viewing boats that pass it provide the best perspective. This is one of the most significant prehistoric art sites in Southeast Asia.
Nanning's food culture rewards spending a day in the city before moving on. Lao You Fen (Old Friend Rice Noodles) — a complex condiment-heavy noodle dish considered the definitive Nanning breakfast — takes its name from a story about a pharmacist recognising a familiar face and preparing the dish quickly. The sesame paste, sour beans, peanuts, fermented tofu, pickled papaya, and chopped spring onion that go on top make it a demanding but rewarding breakfast. Beer fish from the Lijiang River corridor and Liuzhou snail noodles (from neighbouring Liuzhou, one of the more pungent fermented dishes in Chinese cuisine) are readily available throughout the city.
International routes connect to Vietnam, Southeast Asian destinations (Bangkok, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur), and some further-afield connections [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. Guilin is 90 minutes north by high-speed rail — a common combination for Guangxi itineraries.
The T2 terminal has a CIP lounge with Priority Pass eligibility (verify before travel) and a reasonable food selection featuring Guangxi-style rice noodle soups and Zhuang minority dishes alongside national chains. Taxis from the airport to the city cost approximately CNY 80–120 (approximately 40 minutes) [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. An airport metro connection was under development and may now be operational [VERIFY: current status — May 2026].
Practical planning note: Nanning functions as the administrative capital but Guilin receives the majority of Guangxi's international leisure tourism. Nanning serves best as a base for the border crossing to Vietnam, the Zuojiang rock art, and the Zhuang cultural heartland of the region, rather than as a substitute for Guilin's landscape tourism. The two cities together, connected by HSR, give a comprehensive picture of Guangxi.
