长白山机场 · NBS / ZYBS. A purpose-built gateway airport giving direct access to Changbaishan volcanic reserve and its caldera lake, on the North Korean border.
About this airport
Changbaishan Airport is a purpose-built facility serving the Changbaishan Scenic Area — the volcanic mountain range on the Jilin-North Korea border. The airport was constructed specifically to reduce the barrier to visiting one of China's most remote and ecologically significant attractions: the Tianchi crater lake (Heaven Lake, 天池) at the summit, a deep blue caldera lake straddling the Chinese-North Korean border at 2,189 metres elevation.
The airport has a single modern terminal that functions efficiently during the peak summer season (June–September) and increasingly in winter as Changbaishan develops its ski resort infrastructure. Direct flights connect to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other major cities during the summer season, with significantly reduced schedules in the off-season. [VERIFY: current seasonal schedule — May 2026].
Ground transport from NBS to the scenic area requires shuttle buses or hired vehicles. Tourist shuttle buses connect to the Changbaishan scenic area gates in approximately 1 hour. [VERIFY: current schedules and fares — May 2026]. Taxis to the scenic area entrance cost approximately CNY 120–150; taxis to Baihe town, the main accommodation hub at the mountain base (40 km south), cost approximately CNY 80–100. Most visitors book pre-arranged transport through their accommodation or tour operator, as ad-hoc taxis at the airport can be expensive.
Arrivals at NBS are processed quickly given the limited flight volume and domestic-only nature of the route network. No international immigration processing occurs here. SIM coverage at this altitude and location can be intermittent; China Mobile provides the most consistent signal in the Changbaishan region. Load data on your SIM before leaving a major city.
The Tianchi crater lake can only be seen on clear days — cloud and fog are common at the summit, and the mountain generates its own weather. Visitors regularly arrive and find the summit obscured; flexibility in scheduling to allow an additional day in case of bad weather is strongly advisable. Entering from the northern side (Beipo) generally has better weather prospects than the western side. The cable car from the northern base station to the crater rim is the standard approach.
The broader Changbaishan region produces wild ginseng (among the most prized in China), antler velvet, and various medicinal plants. Markets in Baihe town sell these products alongside standard tourist goods. Winter access for skiing is growing: the Wanda Group resort and other developments have expanded the winter visitor infrastructure.
Facilities at the airport terminal are modest: a food counter, basic seating, and taxi access outside. No Priority Pass lounge. Wi-Fi is available with standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
Accessibility at NBS is basic. The compact terminal has lift access and standard facilities. For passengers with mobility limitations, the onward journey to the mountain scenic area — which involves shuttle transport and uneven terrain at the summit — requires careful advance planning with your travel operator.
