林芝米林机场 · LZY / ZUNZ. The lower-altitude gateway to Tibet's Nyingchi Prefecture — the 'Switzerland of Tibet' — with peach blossom valleys, the Yarlung Tsangpo gorge, and Namcha Barwa peak.
About this airport
Nyingchi Mainling Airport is positioned in the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river valley at approximately 2,949 metres — significantly lower than Lhasa's Gonggar Airport at 3,570 m, making it the most physiologically comfortable entry point to the Tibet Autonomous Region for passengers arriving from low-altitude cities. The airport serves Nyingchi Prefecture (known in Tibetan as Kongpo or sNying-khri), a region that stands apart from the high plateau of central Tibet: lower in altitude, heavily forested with pine and fir, and considerably wetter due to moisture carried up the Yarlung Tsangpo gorge from the Indian Ocean.
Tibet Travel Permit requirements apply to most foreign nationals visiting this airport. The permit is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau and must be arranged in advance through a Tibet-registered travel agency. Individual independent travel is not permitted for most foreign nationals in Tibet — group or semi-group tour arrangements are required for permit issuance. Confirm current requirements before booking, as permit availability and conditions have changed periodically and the situation can shift with little notice [VERIFY: current permit status — May 2026].
Nyingchi's primary natural attractions are the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon — technically the world's deepest gorge, where the river descends from the Tibetan Plateau through a dramatic cut in the Himalayan range — and the Namcha Barwa peak at 7,782 m, which is frequently shrouded in cloud but visible on clear mornings as a pyramid of ice above the forest canopy. The Bayi Peach Blossom Festival in late March and early April, when the valley floors and hillsides bloom in pink and white, is among Tibet's most photographed seasonal events and requires advance accommodation booking due to limited capacity.
Flights connect from Chengdu, Lhasa and some other domestic cities [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. Journey times from Chengdu are approximately 1.5 hours. The alternative overland approach via the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318) from Chengdu through the Garzê Tibetan area is one of China's most celebrated road journeys — approximately 2,000 km, requiring 7–10 days depending on stops — and Nyingchi serves as its terminus for those doing a one-way highway journey.
At 2,949 m altitude, most passengers experience only mild altitude effects — some headache and reduced exercise tolerance — rather than the more significant acclimatisation required at Lhasa. Spending one or two nights in Nyingchi before continuing to Lhasa by road (the Sichuan-Tibet Highway section, approximately 500 km with dramatic high passes) is a practical and scenic acclimatisation strategy. The Basum Tso lake (Basomtso), approximately 80 km north of Nyingchi by road, is one of Tibet's most photographed sacred lakes — at 3,500 m, its green-blue water is surrounded by forested mountains and the small island of Tsa-zong Monastery is accessible by wooden bridge. The lake is accessible as a day trip.
The single terminal is compact with very limited food options (basic Tibetan dishes and snacks) and no Priority Pass lounge. Foreign national passengers must have Tibet Travel Permits verified prior to boarding connecting flights from mainland China; these are checked at the origin airport rather than in Nyingchi. The altitude of the terminal itself means some passengers feel slightly short of breath on exertion after landing — walking slowly and avoiding rushing through the terminal is the standard recommendation.
Nyingchi accommodation is primarily in Bayi town and in resort clusters near the major scenic viewpoints. Spring (peach blossom, late March to mid-April) and autumn (clear skies, turning foliage, October) are the most photographically attractive seasons; summer is warm but wet with frequent cloud cover.
