丽江三义国际机场 · LJG / ZPLJ. The gateway airport for Lijiang — the UNESCO Naxi old town, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and the southern gateway to Tiger Leaping Gorge and Shangri-La.
About this airport
Lijiang Sanyi International Airport serves one of Yunnan's most internationally recognised destinations: Lijiang old town (Dayan), a UNESCO World Heritage Site of Naxi minority architecture set in a valley at 2,400 m with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan, 5,596 m) visible to the north. The airport handles substantial domestic traffic and a growing number of international connections, reflecting Lijiang's position as one of China's most visited heritage tourist towns.
The Naxi people — an ethnic minority with an ancient pictographic writing system (Dongba script, one of the world's few living pictographic writing traditions), a living shamanic religious tradition maintained by Dongba priests, and a distinctive ceremonial music culture (Naxi Ancient Music performances are held in the old town regularly) — are the indigenous inhabitants of the Lijiang area. The old town's traditional wooden architecture, cobbled canal streets fed by three spring-fed pools, and mountain backdrop have made it one of the most visited heritage towns in China. The volume of tourism has been substantial: weekend and holiday periods bring extremely large numbers of domestic visitors and the old town's commercial character has shifted significantly toward souvenir retail and bars.
Direct flights connect from Kunming, Chengdu, Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and other Chinese cities [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. International routes to Thailand, Singapore, and some other Asian destinations operate seasonally [VERIFY: current international schedule — May 2026].
The airport is well positioned relative to the town — the 30-minute shuttle to the old town entrance is among the shorter airport-to-attraction journeys in provincial China. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (cable car to 4,506 m) is visible from the shuttle road on clear mornings. The Lugu Lake scenic area (approximately 3 hours west by road) — home to the Mosuo people, who maintain a matrilineal social structure — and the Tiger Leaping Gorge trail (90 km north along the Jinsha River, 2-day hiking trail through one of the deepest gorges in the world) are the primary adventure destinations accessible from Lijiang.
Accommodation in Lijiang's old town ranges from traditional guesthouse courtyard hotels to luxury boutique properties, with price points at the upper end of what is typical for inland China at this level of heritage. Booking well in advance for Golden Week and spring festival periods is essential; the old town's accommodation capacity is finite.
The airport itself has standard Yunnan-influenced food options and a CIP lounge with Priority Pass eligibility (verify before travel). The shuttle bus to the old town entrance takes approximately 30 minutes (CNY 20); taxis cost approximately CNY 60–80. The surrounding Lijiang basin — flat irrigated farmland with views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — is traversed quickly from the airport, and the transition from the airport approach into the old town's cobblestone lanes is one of the more direct airport-to-heritage-site experiences in Chinese provincial tourism.
Visitors should be aware that the Lijiang old town has two distinct areas: the original UNESCO-listed Dayan Old Town (the maze of canals and wooden buildings that constitutes the heritage core) and the adjacent Shuhe Ancient Town (a somewhat less crowded and slightly more relaxed alternative with its own old-town character). Both are accessible from the same general area; Shuhe is approximately 5 km northwest of Dayan's main square. For visitors finding the peak-season density of the main old town difficult, Shuhe offers a quieter alternative.
