桂林两江国际机场 · KWL / ZGKL. The main gateway to Guilin and the Li River karst landscape — one of China's most internationally recognised sceneries, widely depicted on the 20 RMB banknote.
About this airport
Guilin Liangjiang International Airport is one of the most internationally recognised Chinese airports by destination. Guilin's landscape of pointed limestone karst peaks rising from the Li River is the image that non-Chinese people most frequently associate with China — it appears on the 20-yuan banknote, in photography collections, and in films where a generic 'Chinese landscape' is required. The airport serves as the gateway to this landscape and to the broader Guangxi karst zone including Yangshuo (65 km south), Longji rice terraces (90 km north), and the Zhuang-majority southwest toward Nanning.
International connections are substantial for a city of Guilin's size, reflecting strong demand from international leisure travellers: routes connect to Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia, and some European destinations [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. Domestic coverage is comprehensive, with direct services to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and most other major Chinese cities. T2 is the primary terminal with a CIP lounge (Priority Pass eligibility — verify before travel).
The Li River cruise — the 83 km downstream journey by boat from Guilin (or Zhujiang Wharf just south of the city) to Yangshuo, passing the definitive limestone peak scenery — operates daily between March and November and is booked through tour agents or CITS in the city. The cruise takes approximately 4 hours and passes the most photographed sections of the river including the Nine Horses Fresco Hill and Xingping. Early morning departures (before 9 am) give the best light and avoid the afternoon haze.
Yangshuo, at the end of the cruise, is a significant tourist hub in its own right with a well-developed backpacker and mid-range accommodation scene. The Moon Hill karst arch (accessible by bicycle from town), the Yulong River bamboo raft circuit, the Impression Liu Sanjie evening river show, and the food and café scene on West Street and Xianqian Street make it a worthwhile 2–3 day base.
From Guilin, the Longji rice terraces — the Zhuang Ping'an and Red Yao Jinkeng terraced hillside landscapes approximately 90 km north — are accessible as a day trip or overnight stay. April to May (seedling transplanting, vivid green terraces in morning mist) and September to October (golden harvest, before the terraces are drained) are the prime seasons for photography.
The airport's T2 CIP lounge accepts Priority Pass (verify before travel). Food is adequate — Guilin mi fen (rice noodles in a pork and beef broth, served with various toppings including horse meat) is the city's defining street food and is available airside in a reasonable version. Airport Express Bus to the city takes approximately 40 minutes (CNY 20); taxi costs approximately CNY 70–100.
One practical note on the Li River cruise: the official designated cruise departs from Zhujiang Wharf (approximately 20 km south of the city), not from the city centre wharves. Transfer to the wharf is included in most tour packages but must be arranged independently otherwise. This distinction catches first-time visitors who arrive at the Guilin city pier and find it is not the cruise departure point.
Guilin's karst formation extends well beyond the Li River corridor: the Seven Star Cave (Qixing Yan) within the city offers a karst cave system with impressive formations accessible without the river trip. The Reed Flute Cave (Ludi Yan) northwest of the city is larger and lit with coloured lights — more theatrical than geological in presentation, but popular with visitors who want a cave interior experience. Both caves are 30–40 minutes from the city centre by taxi or bus.
