康定机场 · KGT / ZUKD. One of the world's highest airports at 4,278 m, serving Kangding — the gateway town on the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and a centre of Khampa Tibetan culture.
About this airport
Kangding Airport is positioned on the Zheduo plateau at 4,278 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest commercial airports in the world. The airport serves Kangding town, which itself sits at 2,560 m in the Zheduo River valley below the plateau — arriving passengers descend approximately 1,700 metres of elevation from the airport to the town by road. The shuttle bus or taxi follows a winding mountain road down from the plateau; the drive takes approximately 30–40 minutes and the elevation change is accompanied by a visible transition from high-altitude scrub to valley forest.
At 4,278 m, altitude sickness is a real risk for passengers arriving from low elevations. The thin air at the airport can cause immediate headache and breathlessness even during the short walk from the aircraft to the terminal; moving slowly and minimising exertion before the descent is essential. Kangding town at 2,560 m is substantially more manageable and is the appropriate base for acclimatisation before proceeding further onto the Tibetan plateau.
Flights connect primarily from Chengdu (approximately 45 minutes), with some seasonal routes [VERIFY: current schedule — May 2026]. Weather cancellations are more frequent at Kangding than at lower-altitude airports — the Zheduo plateau generates afternoon cloud and the airport operates under limitations that can ground flights on short notice. Build contingency time into itineraries using Kangding.
Kangding town is the gateway to the southern route of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway (G318) — the road that connects Chengdu to Lhasa and has become one of China's most famous overland journeys, attracting motorcyclists, cyclists, and hikers from across the country. The town is a staging point for travel toward Litang, Daocheng, and ultimately Lhasa. Gongga Monastery and other Khampa Tibetan Buddhist monasteries are in the surrounding valley. The Mugecuo alpine lake area (approximately 30 km north) is accessible as a day trip with a hired vehicle.
Kangding's Khampa Tibetan cultural character — distinct from both Han Chinese culture and the more centralised Lhasa Tibetan tradition — is expressed in the local architecture, the butter lamp offerings in the monasteries, and the weekend Tibetan song and dance gatherings at Pao Ma Shan (Horse Racing Hill) in the centre of town.
