九寨沟九黄机场 · JZH / ZUJZ. The high-altitude gateway airport for Jiuzhaigou UNESCO valley and Huanglong UNESCO site in northern Sichuan.
About this airport
Jiuzhaigou Jiuhuang Airport sits at 3,448 metres in the mountains of northern Sichuan, making it one of the highest commercial airports in China. The airport — whose name combines Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong, the two UNESCO World Heritage sites it primarily serves — was purpose-built to improve access to the remote Min Shan mountain range, replacing the previous need for a multi-hour drive from Chengdu on mountain roads.
At 3,448 m, altitude effects are an immediate consideration for passengers arriving from sea level. The terminal walk and any exertion in the first hours should be managed slowly. The road journey to the Jiuzhaigou valley entrance adds a further 1.5–2 hours on winding mountain roads after the flight. Passengers with cardiovascular conditions should consult their doctor before travelling to this altitude.
Flights connect from Chengdu (approximately 45 minutes), Xi'an, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. The Chengdu route is the most frequent and is the primary gateway for international visitors. Seasonal frequency varies significantly — summer and the autumn Golden Week holidays see many more services than shoulder and winter periods. Weather cancellations are more frequent than at lower-altitude airports; build flexibility into connections.
Ground transport from JZH to the Jiuzhaigou valley entrance area takes approximately 1.5–2 hours by scenic area shuttle bus or hired vehicle. There is some accommodation near the valley entrance at the village of Zhangzha; most visitors either day-trip from the valley access town or stay within the scenic area's permitted lodge areas.
Jiuzhaigou — the valley of coloured lakes and calcite terraces — is entered from a bus terminus below the airport. The valley's distinctive lakes (Five Flower Lake, Long Lake, Panda Lake, and others) derive their colours from dissolved minerals and the substrate of submerged ancient tree trunks. Visitor numbers are managed following the 2017 earthquake that caused significant valley floor damage; advance booking with passport registration is required for entry tickets. The valley is most visited in autumn (September–November) when the deciduous trees produce colour above the lake reflections.
Huanglong — a UNESCO site approximately 100 km southwest of the airport, with its remarkable terraced calcite pools at 3,500–5,100 m — is accessible as a separate visit. No Priority Pass lounge at JZH. Food options at the terminal are limited. Wi-Fi is available with standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
