九江庐山机场 · JIU / ZSJJ. A small Jiangxi airport at the foot of Lushan, giving access to the historic summer resort mountain, the Yangtze river city, and Jingdezhen porcelain.
About this airport
Jiujiang Lushan Airport is a small regional facility in northern Jiangxi province, serving the Yangtze River port city of Jiujiang and providing direct access to Lushan — the mountain scenic area that has served as a summer retreat for Chinese intellectuals, Nationalist and Communist leaders, and foreign missionaries since the late 19th century. Lushan (Lu Mountain) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural landscape: the mountain's forested slopes hold over 800 surviving villas from the colonial and Republican eras, including the Meilu Villa where Chiang Kai-shek and Soong May-ling spent summers, and the site of several key Chinese Communist Party conferences in the 1950s and 1960s. The combination of colonial architectural heritage, political history, and mountain scenery is unique to Lushan.
Ground transport from JIU to Jiujiang city or the Lushan scenic area entrance takes approximately 20–40 minutes by taxi (CNY 40–80). [VERIFY: current options — May 2026]. The airport handles limited domestic routes, primarily from Beijing, Shanghai and southern Chinese cities [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. High-speed rail provides the main connectivity for Jiujiang; trains to Nanchang take approximately 30 minutes, and the national high-speed network is accessible from Jiujiang North station.
Lushan itself is approximately 30 km south of Jiujiang city. The mountain is unusual among Chinese scenic areas in that it is a working landscape as well as a tourist one: Chinese families still rent the colonial villas in summer, the mountain paths pass through inhabited settlements, and the village of Guling on the summit plateau has a lived-in, slightly faded quality that is more interesting than a purely commercial scenic area. The Lushan Museum covers the mountain's history from its role as a 19th-century missionary summer retreat to the 1959 Lushan Conference where Peng Dehuai challenged Mao's Great Leap Forward policies.
Jiujiang itself sits at the outlet of Poyang Lake — China's largest freshwater lake and a critical habitat for migratory cranes, including the rare Siberian Crane which overwinters here. The lake and its bird populations are a significant draw for ecotourism visitors in autumn and winter (October–March). The Poyang Lake Migratory Bird Reserve is a serious ornithological destination.
The Porcelain Trail route combining Jiujiang with Jingdezhen (70 km east) and the Lushan landscape forms a distinct cultural circuit in northern Jiangxi that rewards a 3–4 day itinerary. No Priority Pass lounge at JIU. Terminal facilities are basic; food options are very limited. Carry cash for the Lushan area.
