银川河东国际机场 · INC / ZLIC. The gateway to Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region's capital, with access to the Western Xia imperial tombs, the Yellow River at Shapotou, and China's emerging wine region.
About this airport
Yinchuan Hedong International Airport serves Yinchuan, the capital of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region — China's smallest inland autonomous region, predominantly Muslim, and home to the Hui people (Chinese Muslims who are ethnically and linguistically Han Chinese but follow Islamic practice and maintain distinct culinary and architectural traditions). The region sits at the bend of the Yellow River where it turns north before curving back southward, creating an irrigated agricultural plain — the Yinchuan Plain — that has sustained settled civilisation here since the Han dynasty.
Ground transport from INC to Yinchuan city centre is by Airport Express Bus (approximately 35 minutes, CNY 15) or by taxi (approximately CNY 60–90). [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. No metro serves the airport; the express bus is the standard efficient option. The airport handles domestic routes comprehensively alongside some international connections to the Middle East and Southeast Asia [VERIFY: current international routes — May 2026].
Ningxia's most historically unusual attraction is the Western Xia (Xi Xia) imperial tombs — the burial complex of the Tangut Western Xia dynasty (1038–1227 CE), a now-extinct Tibeto-Burman state that controlled the Hexi Corridor until its total destruction by Genghis Khan in 1227. The earthen pyramidal mausolea rise from the desert plain west of Yinchuan in a configuration that resembles the Egyptian pyramid field in both scale and silhouette. The Western Xia Museum adjacent to the tombs is the most complete repository of Tangut cultural artefacts — script, textiles, ceramics, and religious objects from a civilisation that was systematically erased. The site is approximately 35 km from the city centre.
The airport also provides access to Shapotou in the southern part of the region, where the Yellow River meets the Tengger Desert — a striking conjunction of dunes, river, irrigated farmland, and semi-arid steppe that is visible nowhere else in China. Ningxia's wine industry, concentrated in the Helan Mountain foothill areas west of Yinchuan, has grown rapidly and now produces Cabernet Sauvignon and other varietals that have attracted international attention. Winery visits and vineyard tastings are increasingly available.
Halal food is the cultural norm throughout Yinchuan — the city has one of the most consistent Hui Muslim food cultures in China. Lamb-based cooking — particularly Ningxia whole-roasted lamb (全羊宴, quán yáng yàn) and hand-grabbed mutton — is exceptional. Immigration at INC follows the standard fingerprint and biometric procedure for international arrivals. SIM counters from China Mobile and China Unicom are in the arrivals hall.
