神农架机场 · HPG / ZHSG. A small mountain airport giving direct access to the UNESCO-listed Shennongjia forestry district in western Hubei, home to golden snub-nosed monkeys and a remarkable primeval forest ecosystem.
About this airport
Shennongjia Airport is a small facility in the highlands of western Hubei, specifically designed to improve access to the Shennongjia Forestry District — a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and World Natural Heritage Site that would otherwise require a full day's drive from Wuhan. The airport sits at approximately 2,580 m elevation in the mountain terrain, making it one of China's higher airports and affecting aircraft operations accordingly.
Routes connect primarily from Wuhan and Xi'an, with some seasonal destinations [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. The schedule is seasonal — summer months (May–September) have better frequency; winter services are reduced. The airport is small and the terminal modest, but it fulfils its core function of making one of China's most remote forestry districts accessible.
Ground transport from HPG to the Muyu town area (the main gateway for the scenic areas) takes approximately 30 minutes by taxi (CNY 40–70). [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. From Muyu, the main scenic areas of Shennongjia — the Shennongding peak area, the golden snub-nosed monkey viewing platforms at Banbi Rock, and the Dalongtan wildlife centre — are 30–60 km by road. Hired vehicles or tour operators from the airport or Muyu town cover these. The forest roads wind through primeval forest valleys; the drive is part of the experience.
Shennongjia's ecological significance is the primary draw. The golden snub-nosed monkey (金丝猴, jīn sī hóu) — a large, blue-faced, long-haired primate with an improbably vivid golden coat — has its highest population density in the Shennongjia reserve. Viewing is possible from the Banbi Rock wildlife area. Black bears, Chinese giant salamanders (among the world's largest amphibians), clouded leopards, and multiple endemic bird species share the forest.
The mythological dimension of the site is inseparable from its name: Shennong (神农, the Divine Farmer) is one of China's legendary founding emperors, credited with teaching humanity agriculture and the medicinal use of plants. The mountain is traditionally associated with Shennong's herb-gathering activities, and traditional Chinese medicine herb culture is embedded in the local economy. Wild mushroom foraging and medicinal herb markets are a feature of the surrounding villages.
