呼伦贝尔海拉尔机场 · HLD / ZBLA. The gateway to Hulunbuir — China's finest remaining Mongolian grassland — and the Russian and Mongolian border region of northeastern Inner Mongolia.
About this airport
Hulunbuir Hailar Airport serves the Hulunbuir region of eastern Inner Mongolia — a vast area of grassland, forest, and border rivers that represents some of the most intact Mongolian steppe landscape in China. The administrative centre is Hailar, a mid-sized city that functions as the regional hub for a territory roughly the size of France. The broader Hulunbuir region encompasses the Hulunbuir Grassland (considered the most representative of Chinese Inner Mongolian steppe), the Manzhouli border port with Russia, the Moerdaoga National Forest Park along the Genhe River, and the Ewenki and Mongolian minority communities spread across the steppe and forest.
The Hulunbuir Grassland is the primary draw. Unlike the areas around Hohhot where steppe has been significantly reduced by agricultural conversion, the Hulunbuir grasslands remain largely intact — vast, gently rolling, and populated by Mongolian and Evenki herding communities. The summer season (June–August) brings the grassland to full green, and Naadam festival events occur throughout July. The Hulun and Buir lakes (which give the region its name) are large shallow steppe lakes supporting significant wetland bird populations including several crane and waterfowl species. The Morigele River meanders across the grassland in sweeping oxbow curves that are photographed extensively from viewpoints on the surrounding ridgeline.
Flights connect primarily to Hohhot, Beijing, and some northeastern Chinese cities [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. Summer is the peak season and the schedule is significantly better than off-season; winter services to some destinations are substantially reduced. Getting to the grassland areas beyond Hailar requires hired vehicles or pre-arranged tour transport — no public transit covers the scenic areas adequately. Typical day-trip distances from Hailar to the major grassland viewpoints are 50–100 km.
Ground transport from HLD to Hailar city centre takes approximately 20 minutes by taxi (CNY 30–50). [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. The city has adequate hotels, restaurants serving Mongolian and Chinese food, and car hire operators for the grassland areas.
The Manzhouli border crossing with Russia is approximately 200 km west, accessible by road or rail from Hailar. The city has accumulated a distinctive Russified commercial character — matryoshka doll markets, Russian goods shops, and Cyrillic signage — driven by decades of cross-border trade. Those with extra time can combine a Hulunbuir grassland trip with a Manzhouli stop. The Zabaykalsk–Manzhouli crossing into Russia requires a Russian visa.
No Priority Pass lounge at HLD. Food options are limited to Mongolian-influenced lamb dishes and basic café fare. Wi-Fi is available with standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply. Carry sufficient cash — card infrastructure in rural grassland areas can be unreliable.
