海口美兰国际机场 · HAK / ZJHK. The northern gateway to Hainan Island and capital of China's tropical free-trade island province, with a 30-day visa-free programme for many nationalities.
About this airport
Haikou Meilan International Airport is the northern gateway to Hainan Island — China's southernmost and only tropical province, and the site of a Free Trade Port that the central government has designated as a major economic development zone with wide-ranging implications for trade, tourism, and residency. The airport serves Haikou, the island's capital, while Sanya Phoenix Airport (SYX) serves the southern beach resort area.
The T2 terminal, completed in 2021, is a large modern facility that significantly expanded the airport's capacity. Hainan's Free Trade Port status has driven investment in airport infrastructure and both terminals at Haikou are well-maintained. The metro connection is the standard efficient transport option: Metro Line 1 connects the airport to Haikou city in approximately 30 minutes for approximately CNY 5–10. [VERIFY: current fare — May 2026]. Airport Express Bus services also run to the city. Taxis to the central business district cost approximately CNY 50–80.
Hainan's 30-day visa-free entry programme covers nationals of a substantial number of countries for tourism, transit, and business purposes — among the most generous regional visa-free access arrangements in China. Visitors must enter through Hainan and depart from the island; the visa-free status does not permit onward travel into mainland China without a separate visa. [VERIFY: current nationality list and conditions — May 2026].
Immigration at HAK for international arrivals processes through T2's international section. The standard fingerprint and biometric procedure applies. Under the visa-free scheme, processing is streamlined. Wait times for international arrivals are typically 15–30 minutes. [VERIFY: current typical wait times — May 2026]. SIM counters from China Mobile and China Unicom are in the arrivals hall.
Haikou itself is a worthwhile destination beyond being a transit hub. The Qilou architecture of the old town district — covered colonnaded shophouse streets built in the early 20th century by returned overseas Chinese — provides a distinctive streetscape in the Zhongshan Road area. Several natural hot spring resorts are accessible from the city. The volcanic landscape of Shishan (a volcanic geological park with lava tube caves and basalt formations) is 30 km west. Most international visitors do continue south to Sanya's beach resorts, but Haikou rewards a day or two.
Scams at HAK are less prevalent than at major mainland airports, given the island's regulatory environment. The official taxi rank is outside the T2 arrivals exit.
Priority Pass access is through the T2 CIP Lounge (verify Priority Pass eligibility before travel). Food in T2 includes Hainan-style dishes (Wenchang chicken, Jiaji duck) alongside standard chains.
Wi-Fi requires standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply on domestic networks despite Hainan's Free Trade Port status.
Accessibility at HAK is good: T2's modern construction includes consistent lifts, tactile paving, ramps, and accessible toilet facilities. Metro Line 1 platforms are accessible by lift. Wheelchair assistance is available through your airline.
