延安南泥湾机场 · ENH / ZLYA. The airport for Yan'an — the revolutionary capital of the Chinese Communist Party during the Yan'an Period (1935–1947) — a pilgrimage site for Chinese patriotic education tours.
About this airport
Yan'an Nanniwan Airport serves Yan'an in northern Shaanxi, a city of profound significance in Chinese Communist Party history. Yan'an was the terminus of the Long March in 1935 and served as the Party's operational base and de facto capital for twelve years until the Communists moved east to Shijiazhuang and then Beijing in 1947–1949. Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai and other senior Party leaders lived in the characteristic Loess Plateau cave dwellings (yaodong) of the Yan'an hills during this period — the cave dwelling was both a practical adaptation to the region's geology and an ideologically appropriate austerity measure during wartime. The Yan'an Revolutionary Memorial, the Yangjialing Revolutionary Headquarters, the Wangjiaping Revolutionary Headquarters, and the Zaoyuan Park complex of residences are all significant pilgrimage sites for Chinese patriotic education visits, drawing millions of domestic visitors annually.
The airport opened in 2020 — a modern facility that replaced an older airport and significantly improved capacity and access. Routes connect to Xi'an, Beijing, Shanghai, and other major cities [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. Xi'an is 3 hours by high-speed rail (the Taiyuan-Zhongwei-Yinchuan railway passes through Yan'an area), making the city accessible as a long day trip from Xi'an for those who prefer rail.
Ground transport from ENH to Yan'an city takes approximately 25 minutes by Airport Express Bus (CNY 20) or taxi (approximately CNY 50–70). [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. The bus connects to the main city transport hubs.
Yan'an is set in the Loess Plateau — the characteristic landscape of eroded yellow loess soil formed by wind-deposited sediment that gives the Yellow River its colour and its name. The terrain is deeply cut by ravines; the cave dwelling (yaodong) architecture that defines the area is literally carved into the loess cliffs. Entire hillsides of yaodong — arched doorways leading to barrel-vaulted rooms cut into the hillside, naturally insulated and structurally stable — remain inhabited across the region, and the revolutionary sites are authentic yaodong rather than reconstructions.
The Yellow River flows approximately 100 km east of the city. The Hukou Waterfall — where the Yellow River compresses through a narrow gorge from 400 metres to 50 metres wide, creating a powerful cascade — is approximately 165 km east and accessible as a day trip. The Qingjian River gorge south of the city has additional geological interest in the loess formation landscape.
