张家界荷花国际机场 · DYG / ZGDY. The gateway airport to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — the quartzite sandstone pillar landscape that inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar.
About this airport
Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport serves Zhangjiajie in northwestern Hunan, the gateway to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — the landscape of eroded quartzite sandstone pillars rising above subtropical forest that served as visual reference for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in James Cameron's Avatar (2009). The park, along with the broader Wulingyuan Scenic Area (which includes Tianzi Mountain and Suoxi Valley), is a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed for its natural values.
Ground transport from DYG to Zhangjiajie city centre takes approximately 20 minutes by airport shuttle bus (CNY 20) or by taxi (approximately CNY 40–60). [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. From the city, the Wulingyuan park entrance is approximately 40 km by road (30–40 minutes). Most visitors book accommodation near Wulingyuan or take a taxi directly from the airport.
The airport has direct flights from Changsha, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and multiple other Chinese cities. International routes to South Korea, Thailand, and some other Asian destinations operate seasonally. [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. The airport has grown significantly in capacity following the wave of domestic tourism driven by the Avatar association.
No international routes operate year-round; immigration is primarily domestic with seasonal international processing. SIM counters are in the arrivals hall. China Mobile and China Unicom provide coverage; signal can be intermittent in the deeper gorge sections of the national park.
The Tianmen Mountain cable car — departing from a purpose-built terminal in Zhangjiajie city centre, separate from the national park — is the other major attraction in the area. The cable car is approximately 7.5 km long and passes through the natural arch of Tianmen Cave (the 999-step staircase up the cliff face is an alternative for those who walk). The two experiences (Wulingyuan pillars and Tianmen Mountain) are frequently combined in a two or three-day visit.
The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass-bottomed bridge — a suspension bridge at 430 m above the canyon floor, 430 m long — is one of several vertiginous tourist infrastructure additions to the region. The density of dramatic viewpoints and photo opportunities within a compact area is one reason the region has become one of China's most domestically photographed natural landscapes.
No Priority Pass lounge at DYG. Food options are limited provincial airport standard. Wi-Fi is available with standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
Accessibility at DYG is adequate for the current terminal. Lifts and ramps are present. Wheelchair assistance is available through your airline. The national park terrain involves significant elevation changes and steps; accessible routes within the park are limited to specific boardwalk sections.
