大理云南机场 · DLU / ZPDL. A small airport serving the lakeside Bai minority city of Dali, a long-established backpacker hub and gateway to the Yunnan highlands.
About this airport
Dali Yunnan Airport serves the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in northwestern Yunnan, positioned between Erhai Lake and Cangshan Mountain — the defining landscape that has made Dali one of China's most enduringly popular traveller destinations. The airport sits south of the lake near the modern city of Xiaguan (Dali's administrative centre), while the historic Dali Old Town and Bai minority villages are on the lake's western shore, 15–20 km from the airport.
Ground transport from DLU to Dali city (Xiaguan) is by airport shuttle bus (approximately 30 minutes, CNY 10–15) or taxi (approximately CNY 50–80). [VERIFY: current fares — May 2026]. From Xiaguan, the further 10–15 km to Dali Old Town requires another taxi or local bus. Many visitors book accommodation that includes pickup; this is advisable given the layered transfer. Taxis from the airport directly to Dali Old Town cost approximately CNY 80–120 and take 30–40 minutes.
The airport handles mainly domestic routes, connecting Dali to Kunming (approximately 40 minutes — the route is short enough that some visitors choose road or rail instead), Chengdu, Guangzhou, and other major Chinese cities. [VERIFY: current routes — May 2026]. Kunming remains the primary gateway for international visitors to Dali, with connecting domestic flights used for the final leg.
No international routes operate at DLU; immigration is domestic. SIM coverage in Dali uses all major networks. China Mobile has the most consistent coverage in the rural Erhai Lake areas.
Dali's appeal rests on three elements: the Erhai Lake landscape (a large freshwater lake at 1,972 m elevation, surrounded by Bai minority villages with their distinctive white-walled, grey-tiled architecture), the Bai minority culture (with the Bai language, the Three Pagodas, and the Benzhu temple tradition), and the old town atmosphere that made Dali a significant stop on the overland backpacker circuit from the 1980s onward. The old town's laid-back café culture, creative community, and mountain backdrop remain largely intact, though the pace of tourism development has changed some streets significantly.
The Cangshan mountain range above the old town has hiking trails accessible by chairlift and on foot, and several high-altitude alpine lakes including Qingbi Xi. The Erhai Lake circuit by bicycle or electric scooter (a full-day ride) is one of the most used visitor experiences.
No Priority Pass lounge at DLU. Food options are basic café and snack standard. Wi-Fi is available with standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
Accessibility at DLU is basic for a smaller regional airport. Essential facilities are present. Wheelchair assistance should be arranged through your airline in advance. The Dali Old Town terrain involves cobbled streets and some stepped areas.
