稻城亚丁机场 · DCY / ZUDC. One of the world's highest commercial airports at 4,411 m, providing the primary air access to the Yading alpine reserve and its three sacred Tibetan peaks.
About this airport
Daocheng Yading Airport holds the distinction of being one of the highest commercial airports in the world at 4,411 metres above sea level. The airport was opened in 2013 specifically to make Daocheng Yading Nature Reserve — the alpine sanctuary of three sacred Tibetan peaks and their associated glacial lakes — accessible without the gruelling multi-day overland journey from Chengdu that was previously the only practical approach.
At 4,411 m, the airport's altitude creates immediate physiological effects for passengers arriving from low elevations. The air is approximately 60% as dense as at sea level; the walk from the aircraft to the terminal, modest by normal standards, may leave passengers breathless. Altitude sickness symptoms — headache, nausea, fatigue, difficulty sleeping — can begin within hours of arrival for those ascending too quickly. It is strongly advisable to spend at least one or two nights in Daocheng town (3,750 m) before attempting the Yading reserve trails, which reach above 4,700 m.
Flights connect primarily from Chengdu (approximately 1 hour) and Chongqing, with some seasonal routes from other cities [VERIFY: current schedule — May 2026]. The summer and autumn season (June–October) has more frequent services; winter sees reduced schedules or complete closures depending on conditions. Book well in advance for peak Yading season (September–October), when the Tibetan highland autumn colour draws the highest visitor numbers.
The terminal is small and functional. Processing from aircraft to exit is rapid. Ground transport to Daocheng town takes approximately 20 minutes by shuttle or taxi; transport to the Yading reserve entrance at Riwa requires a further 1.5–2 hours by road through dramatic Tibetan highland scenery. Daocheng town has guesthouses and basic hotels; the reserve entrance at Riwa has some accommodation for those who want to avoid the daily road journey to the trailheads.
Yading Nature Reserve is centred on three peaks sacred in Tibetan Buddhism: Chenrezig (Jambeyang, 6,032 m), Jambeyang (6,032 m), and Chanadorje (5,958 m). The lakes below the peaks — Milk Lake (Luorong), Five Colour Lake, and Pearl Lake — are glacially fed and coloured by mineral sediment. The combination of sacred peaks, turquoise lakes, and golden autumn hillsides makes this one of the most sought-after landscapes in Tibetan China.
Carry all cash needed for your stay. Card infrastructure in the reserve area is unreliable. No Priority Pass lounge at DCY. Food at the terminal is very limited. Wi-Fi is available with standard registration; Chinese internet restrictions apply. The altitude is the defining factor for planning; acclimatise carefully.
