成都双流国际机场 · CTU / ZUUU. Chengdu's older airport closer to the city centre, now sharing traffic with Tianfu (TFU), with metro access and 144-hour Sichuan province transit exemption.
About this airport
Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport has served Sichuan's capital in various forms since the 1930s, when a military airfield was established on the site. The modern commercial airport grew substantially through the 2000s and 2010s, handling the rapid growth in tourism to Sichuan — the panda research base, the UNESCO-listed Leshan Giant Buddha, Mount Emei, and the Jiuzhaigou Valley — alongside a swelling tech economy driven by Chengdu's emergence as one of China's secondary tech hubs.
In June 2021, the new Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU) opened approximately 50 kilometres to the south, designed as the long-term primary hub for the city. The plan calls for a phased transition in which international routes migrate to Tianfu while Shuangliu handles residual domestic traffic. As of 2026 both airports continue operating with mixed domestic and international schedules during the extended transition period; some international routes remain at CTU and some have moved to TFU. Confirm your flights' airports carefully when booking Chengdu connections.
Shuangliu's principal advantage over Tianfu is proximity to the city. Terminal 1 handles domestic flights; Terminal 2 handles domestic and some international services. Both are connected to Chengdu Metro Line 10 (the Airport Line), which provides direct access to the city's main metro network. The journey from CTU to the city centre (Century City, Tianfu Square area) takes approximately 30 minutes, compared to close to an hour from Tianfu. For passengers with 144-hour TWOV clearance wanting to visit Chengdu between connections, Shuangliu's location makes a rapid city trip feasible in a way that Tianfu's distance does not.
Immigration at CTU processes international arrivals through T2's international piers. The standard fingerprint and biometric procedure applies. Wait times for international arrivals are typically 20–40 minutes during peak East Asian morning banks; afternoon arrivals are generally faster. [VERIFY: current typical wait times — May 2026]. E-channel lanes for residence permit holders are available.
SIM counters from China Mobile and China Unicom are present in the T2 arrivals area. Standard tourist data packages are available. Bring your passport. The counters are near the arrivals exit and clearly signed.
Metro Line 10 from T1 and T2 connects to the city centre in approximately 30 minutes (CNY 6). [VERIFY: current fare — May 2026]. The metro terminates at the Airport North station at T1 and Airport South at T2; confirm your terminal's stop when boarding. Taxis from CTU to Tianfu Square or the city centre cost approximately CNY 50–80. Chengdu's traffic is unpredictable; the metro is the more reliable option during peak hours.
Scams at CTU arrivals follow the standard pattern: unofficial drivers in arrivals, inflated fixed-price offers. The official taxi rank is outside the arrivals exit and clearly marked. Chengdu is a major tourist city and unlicensed operators are aware of the appetite from foreign visitors; proceed directly to the official queue.
Priority Pass access at CTU is through the Sichuan Airlines Lounge and Air China Lounge in T2. Both accept Priority Pass. Standard Chinese regional lounge quality: hot food including some Sichuan options, beverages, and adequate seating. The Sichuan Airlines lounge is the larger option.
Wi-Fi at CTU requires passport-scan verification. Connection speeds are reasonable. Chinese internet restrictions apply on the domestic network.
Food in T2 includes authentic Sichuan food stalls featuring mapo tofu rice boxes, dan dan noodles, and a hotpot counter alongside standard Chinese and international chains. The Sichuan food here is relatively genuine — Chengdu's food culture is strong enough that airport operators are not entirely insulated from quality expectations. Prices are airport-level (30–50% above city equivalents). Late-night coverage is maintained by the always-open fast food counters.
Smoking rooms are designated airside in both terminals; check the terminal map for current positions. No smoking is permitted in the main concourses or departures halls.
Accessibility at CTU is adequate for a large regional airport. Lifts, tactile paving, ramps, and accessible toilets are present. Wheelchair assistance is available through your airline. Metro Line 10 stations are accessible by lift. T2's international terminal infrastructure is more consistently equipped than T1.
Terminals
Two terminals: T1 (domestic) and T2 (domestic and international). Metro Line 10 (Airport Line) connects both terminals directly to the city's metro network. Note that since the opening of Tianfu (TFU) in 2021, Shuangliu handles a reduced proportion of Chengdu's total traffic.
Transit to the city
Metro Line 10 runs from T1 and T2 to the city centre (Century City, Shuangliu stations) in about 30 minutes (CNY 6). Taxis to Tianfu Square cost CNY 50–80. Shuangliu is closer to the city centre than the newer Tianfu airport.
Priority Pass lounges
Food
T2 has authentic Sichuan food stalls including mapo tofu rice boxes and dan dan noodles alongside standard chains. The spice levels at airport stalls are generally moderated for tourist traffic.
Sleep options
The Marriott Chengdu Airport is near but not connected to T2. Several budget hotels are in the Shuangliu area. For longer layovers, the city centre is 30 minutes away by metro.
Transit visa-free rules
Chengdu (CTU) holds a 144-hour TWOV for eligible nationalities, covering travel within Sichuan province.
