长沙黄花国际机场 · CSX / ZGHA. Hunan's capital airport with the world's first commercial maglev train to the city, serving as hub for the Zhangjiajie mountains, Fenghuang ancient town, and Hunan cuisine culture.
About this airport
Changsha Huanghua International Airport has one of the most distinctive ground transport connections of any Chinese airport: the Changsha Maglev, connecting the airport to Changsha South Railway Station in approximately 10 minutes. Note: this is the Changsha Maglev (长沙磁浮快线), a dedicated airport rail line reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h, distinct from the higher-speed Transrapid system at Shanghai Pudong. The Changsha Maglev runs frequently and significantly outperforms the slower Metro Line 6 option for passengers heading to the high-speed rail network at Changsha South. Fare is approximately CNY 20. [VERIFY: current fare — May 2026].
Metro Line 6 also connects the airport to the city network, running to the Guanggu Square area and providing broader city coverage for a lower fare. Taxis to the city centre (Furong, Tianxin areas) cost approximately CNY 80–120 and take 30–50 minutes depending on traffic.
Immigration at CSX processes through T2's international section. The standard fingerprint and biometric procedure applies. International connections include Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia (particularly Thailand), and some European routes. Wait times for international arrivals are typically 20–35 minutes. [VERIFY: current typical wait times — May 2026]. SIM counters from China Mobile and China Unicom are in the T2 arrivals hall.
Changsha is the capital of Hunan province, a city of approximately 8 million people with a vibrant food culture and a disproportionately influential media industry (Hunan Satellite TV produces some of China's most popular entertainment programmes). Hunan cuisine — the other major spicy cuisine of China alongside Sichuan — is characterised by fresh chilli heat and sour notes rather than Sichuan's numbing pepper. Changsha's signature dishes include Chairman Mao's red-braised pork (毛氏红烧肉, for which Shao Shan, 90 km away, is historically associated), fish head with chopped chilli (剁椒鱼头), and stinky tofu (臭豆腐) — the latter a street food that is pungent from a distance and excellent when fresh.
The province's heritage and natural attractions are within day-trip or overnight reach: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (the Avatar Mountains) is approximately 5 hours by high-speed rail; Fenghuang ancient town (Miao minority architecture on a river) is approximately 5 hours by road or rail; Shaoshan (Mao Zedong's birth village) is 90 km southwest by road.
Scams at CSX follow the standard pattern. The official taxi rank is outside the T2 arrivals exit. Priority Pass access is through the China Southern Lounge T2 and the CIP Lounge T2 (verify Priority Pass eligibility for the CIP Lounge before travel).
Food in T2 includes Hunan-style spicy noodles, braised dishes, and stinky tofu stalls alongside standard Chinese and international chains. Wi-Fi requires the standard registration process. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
Accessibility at CSX is adequate: lifts, ramps, and tactile paving are present in both T1 and T2. The Changsha Maglev platforms are accessible by lift. Metro Line 6 platforms are also accessible. Wheelchair assistance is available through your airline.
