承德普宁机场 · CDE / ZBCD. A small airport serving the imperial summer resort city of Chengde in Hebei, with limited routes primarily to southern Chinese destinations.
About this airport
Chengde Puning Airport is a small regional facility serving the city of Chengde in northern Hebei province. Chengde is one of the most historically significant cities in northern China: it was the summer capital of the Qing emperors, whose Mountain Resort (Bishu Shanzhuang, 避暑山庄) — the largest surviving imperial garden complex in China — is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Eight Outer Temples that surround it, including the remarkable Puning Temple with its 27-metre tall carved wooden Avalokiteshvara statue (one of the tallest surviving wooden religious sculptures in the world).
Ground transport from CDE to Chengde city centre is by taxi (approximately 30 minutes, CNY 50–80) or bus (where services are available). [VERIFY: current transport options and fares — May 2026]. The Mountain Resort and the Eight Outer Temples are distributed across an area of forested hills and valleys north of the city centre; hiring a taxi by the hour or a vehicle for the day is the most efficient way to cover the main sites, which cannot be walked between comfortably.
The airport handles a limited number of domestic routes, primarily connecting to southern Chinese cities. Most visitors to Chengde arrive by high-speed rail from Beijing North station (approximately 90 minutes), which makes the airport a secondary gateway primarily useful for those connecting from distant southern or western cities where no convenient rail connection exists. [VERIFY: current routes and seasonal schedule — May 2026].
No international routes operate at CDE. Immigration processing is domestic. SIM coverage in Chengde uses all major networks; China Mobile and China Unicom both have adequate coverage.
The Mountain Resort itself requires a full day. The park contains an extraordinary collection of gardens, palaces, and lakes in a naturalistic landscape of 5.64 square kilometres — larger than Beijing's Summer Palace. The Eight Outer Temples, particularly the Puning Temple (Tibetan-style) and the Putouzongcheng Temple (modelled on the Potala Palace in Lhasa), are further up the valley beyond the resort walls. A second day allows coverage of both the resort and the key temples.
The Jinshanling section of the Great Wall, approximately 125 km east of Chengde, offers some of the best unrestored Wall hiking in Hebei: a day trip by hired vehicle takes 1.5 hours each way.
Terminal facilities are basic: food counter, limited seating, taxi access outside. No Priority Pass lounge. Wi-Fi is available with standard registration. Chinese internet restrictions apply.
Accessibility at CDE is basic for a small regional airport. Essential lifts and ramps are present. Wheelchair assistance should be arranged through your airline in advance.
