China visa for United Kingdom citizens
UK passport holders are eligible for the 30-day visa-free entry to mainland China for tourism, business or family visit, plus 90-day visa-free for Hong Kong and 30-day for Macau.
Current status (verified May 2026)
UK ordinary passport holders are eligible for the 30-day visa-free entry to mainland China for tourism, business, family visit or transit. No visa required for stays of up to 30 days from the date of entry.
This is a substantial change from pre-2024 rules, when British citizens needed a visa for all mainland visits.
What you need at the border
- Passport valid at least 6 months beyond intended stay.
- Onward ticket (sometimes asked for, not always checked).
- Hotel booking confirmation or address of stay.
- The digital health and customs declaration completed via WeChat mini-programme or QR scan at arrival.
What 30-day visa-free covers
- Tourism, business meetings, family visit.
- Single or multiple entries within the 30 days.
- Travel anywhere in mainland China except restricted regions (Tibet still requires the Tibet Travel Permit; some Xinjiang and other border areas have additional requirements).
What it doesn't cover
- Working, studying or journalism — these require the appropriate visa category.
- Stays over 30 days — apply for an L visa for longer trips.
- Tibet Travel Permit zones — book through a licensed Tibetan travel agency.
Hong Kong and Macau
UK passport-holders are visa-free for Hong Kong (180 days — exceptional duration) and Macau (30 days). Crossing between Hong Kong/Macau and the mainland is a separate immigration event; the mainland 30-day visa-free entitlement applies independently.
Hotel registration
Whether you stay in a hotel or with friends, you must be registered with local police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels do this automatically. If staying with friends or in a private flat, register at the local police station.
What to confirm before flying
The 30-day visa-free policy was introduced in stages; UK eligibility was confirmed in 2024 and remains in force. Confirm with the Chinese Embassy in London or your nearest consulate before booking flights — visa rules can change on short notice.
