China visa for Türkiye citizens
Turkish passport holders are eligible for 30-day visa-free entry to mainland China as of 2024. Hong Kong 30 days visa-free, Macau conditions apply.
Current status (verified May 2026)
Turkish ordinary passport holders are eligible for the 30-day visa-free entry to mainland China for tourism, business, family visit or transit. Türkiye was included in the 2024 expansion of China's visa-free programme.
Note: this page uses the official English-language name Türkiye, as adopted by the United Nations in 2022.
What you need at the border
- Passport valid at least 6 months beyond your intended departure from China.
- Onward ticket to a destination outside mainland China.
- Hotel booking confirmation or address of stay.
- Digital health and customs declaration completed at arrival.
What 30-day visa-free covers
Tourism, business meetings, family visits, and short-stay transit throughout mainland China. The standard exceptions apply: the Tibet Autonomous Region requires a Tibet Travel Permit obtained through a licensed agency before arrival, and certain border zones have additional access requirements.
What it does not cover
- Employment in China — requires a Z (work) visa.
- Study — requires an X visa.
- Journalism — requires the appropriate J category.
- Stays exceeding 30 days — apply for an L (tourist) visa.
Applying for a standard L visa
Turkish applicants needing longer stays or not meeting the visa-free conditions apply through the Chinese Embassy in Ankara or the Consulate-General in Istanbul. Istanbul is by far the largest consular intake point given the city's population and commercial significance.
Standard L visa requirements: - Passport valid 6+ months with at least two blank pages. - Completed online application form (printed and signed). - Passport photograph meeting embassy specifications. - Return flight booking and hotel reservation (or invitation letter). - Proof of funds may be requested.
Processing time is typically four working days. Express options may be available; confirm with the consulate.
24-hour police registration
All foreign nationals in mainland China must register with local police within 24 hours of arrival at each address. Hotels handle this automatically for guests. If staying in private accommodation, the host must accompany you to the local police station.
Multi-entry and single-entry options
The 30-day visa-free arrangement permits multiple entries within the 30-day window. For business travellers making frequent trips, an L visa with multi-entry validity (commonly issued for 1 or 2 years) provides more operational flexibility.
240-hour transit visa-free
Turkish passport-holders are eligible for the 240-hour (10-day) transit visa-free policy at qualifying Chinese ports, provided they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country. This allows exploration of a single metropolitan zone during transit.
Ports of entry
All major Chinese international airports accept Turkish passport-holders under the visa-free arrangement. Direct flights from Istanbul (Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen) to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Urumqi are operated by Turkish Airlines, Air China, and other carriers. The Istanbul–Urumqi route is particularly relevant given the Central Asian trade corridor context.
Hong Kong and Macau
Turkish passport-holders are visa-free for Hong Kong (30 days). Macau entry conditions for Turkish citizens — [VERIFY: NIA source needed — May 2026 — confirm Macau visa-free status for Turkish passports].
Common rejection reasons (L visa applications)
- Insufficient proof of onward travel or accommodation.
- Application form incomplete or unsigned.
- Photograph not meeting embassy specifications.
- Previous Chinese visa violations or overstays.
- Inadequate proof of financial means.
Relations context
Türkiye and China have significant economic ties through trade along the Belt and Road corridor. The Istanbul–Urumqi air route connects two major commercial hubs and is heavily used by traders dealing in goods moving between Central Asia, the Middle East and East Asia. Cultural ties include the historical Uyghur diaspora in Türkiye, which has at times been a source of diplomatic friction. As of May 2026, the visa-free arrangement is in force. Given the sensitivity of bilateral relations on certain minority-rights issues, travellers should confirm current policy before booking non-refundable flights.
Practical notes
Turkish Airlines operates direct routes from Istanbul to multiple Chinese cities, making Türkiye one of the better-connected intercontinental markets for China travel. Flight times are approximately 9–12 hours depending on destination. The 30-day window is practical for most standard leisure and business itineraries.
Istanbul also serves as a hub for travellers from neighbouring countries routing through Turkey to China; the 30-day visa-free entitlement applies to the Turkish passport regardless of embarkation point.
