China visa for Switzerland citizens

Swiss ordinary passport holders are eligible for the 30-day visa-free entry to mainland China for tourism, business, family visit or transit. Switzerland was included in the 2024 expansion. Switzerland has historically maintained strong bilateral trade and investment ties with China.

What you need at the border

  • Passport valid at least 6 months beyond stay.
  • Onward ticket.
  • Hotel booking or address.
  • Digital arrival declaration.

Scope

Tourism, business meetings, family visits. Tibet Travel Permit required separately. Stays beyond 30 days need an L visa from the Chinese Embassy in Bern.

Business travel notes

Switzerland's financial, pharmaceutical, and watch industries maintain significant commercial links with China. Attendance at trade meetings, due diligence visits, and non-revenue-generating business activities are covered under the 30-day visa-free window. Paid work or employment requires a Z visa.

Hong Kong and Macau

Swiss passport-holders are visa-free for Hong Kong (90 days) and Macau (90 days). These are separate immigration events from mainland China.

Embassy

The Chinese Embassy is in Bern; the Consulate-General in Geneva serves Swiss Romande applicants and the international Geneva-based organisations. CVASC offices handle L visa intake.
