China visa for India citizens
Indian passport holders currently require a visa to enter mainland China. The standard pathway is the L (tourist) visa via the Chinese Embassy or CVASC offices.
Current status (verified May 2026)
Indian ordinary passport holders require a visa to enter mainland China as of May 2026. India is not on the 30-day visa-free entry list. The main pathway for tourism is the standard L (tourist) visa.
Background
India–China relations have been strained since the 2020 border clashes in Ladakh, and visa issuance — particularly for individual tourists — has been more restrictive than in earlier years. Business and official travel has continued, but leisure tourism approvals have been more variable. The situation may evolve; check the current status with the Chinese Embassy before planning travel.
Applying for an L visa
Indian applicants submit through the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi or consulates-general in Mumbai, Kolkata, or Chennai. The CVASC network in India handles intake at those locations.
Standard requirements: - Passport valid 6+ months beyond intended stay, with two blank pages. - Completed online application form (printed and signed). - Passport photograph meeting embassy specifications. - Return flight booking and confirmed hotel reservation. - Proof of funds (bank statement) in some cases. - Invitation letter for family visits.
Processing time is typically five to seven working days, though this can vary during periods of high demand or diplomatic complexity.
240-hour transit visa-free
Indian passport-holders are eligible for the 240-hour (10-day) transit visa-free policy at qualifying ports, provided they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country and do not leave the designated transit zone without permission. This applies at major airports including Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, Guangzhou, and others.
Hong Kong and Macau
Indian passport-holders require a visa for Hong Kong (an ETA or pre-arranged visa from the Hong Kong Immigration Department). Macau requires a visa for Indian citizens. Conditions differ from mainland China.
Practical notes
Confirm the latest situation with the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi before making any bookings. Visa policy between India and China is particularly subject to change based on bilateral relations.
