The Macau heritage trail

The historic centre of Macau, UNESCO-listed in 2005, is the largest surviving collection of Portuguese-era architecture in Asia. The 25 listed sites spread across the peninsula in a walkable sequence.

The trail

A roughly 4 km walking sequence, with 4–6 hours including stops. Start at A-Ma Temple in the south and finish at the Border Gate / Camões Garden in the north — or reverse.

Major sites in walking order (south to north)

A-Ma Temple The oldest temple in Macau (~1488), dedicated to A-Ma (Mazu, the sea goddess). 'Macau' takes its name from the temple. Three pavilions on a stone hillside.

Maritime Museum Adjacent to A-Ma Temple. The maritime history of southern China and Macau's role as a Portuguese trading port.

Moorish Barracks Former police barracks built 1874 in a Mughal-influenced style. Now houses Macau's Marine and Water Bureau.

Lilau Square Small Portuguese-style fountain square; one of the earliest residential areas of Portuguese Macau.

Mandarin's House 1869 traditional Chinese residence; restored. The original owner was Zheng Guanying, a late-Qing reformer.

St Lawrence's Church Catholic church (~16th century, current structure 1846). Sailors' families gathered here to await safe passage.

Holy House of Mercy Late-16th-century charitable institution. Still operating; small museum upstairs.

Senado Square (Largo do Senado) The geographic heart of historic Macau. Black-and-white wave-pattern Portuguese cobblestone (calçada) paving. Surrounded by 18th-century pastel buildings: the Leal Senado (former municipal council), General Post Office, St Dominic's Church.

St Dominic's Church Founded 1587. Cream-and-green Baroque façade, light interior.

Ruins of St Paul's The most photographed image of Macau. Façade of the former Mater Dei Church (1602–1640), built by Jesuits with Japanese Christian craftsmen exiled from Japan. Burned 1835; only the façade and crypt survived.

Mount Fortress Overlooking St Paul's. 17th-century Portuguese defensive fortress; cannon batteries; the Macau Museum at the centre.

Macau Museum On Mount Fortress. Strong, well-curated history of Macau from prehistoric to contemporary. 2 hours minimum.

Old Protestant Cemetery and Camões Garden Just north of St Paul's. Founded 1821; British and American Protestants buried here. Camões Garden, a quiet retreat associated with the 16th-century Portuguese poet Luís de Camões who is reputed to have composed *Os Lusíadas* in Macau.

Casa Garden Restored 18th-century Portuguese house adjoining Camões Garden. Now housing the Orient Foundation Macau office.

Beyond the central trail

Guia Fortress and Lighthouse On Macau's highest hill. The lighthouse (1865) is the oldest on the Chinese coast. Walk up via the cable car or hiking path.

Lou Lim Ioc Garden Suzhou-style classical Chinese garden, late-Qing. Free entry, quiet.

Tap Seac Square Larger civic square; houses the Macau Cultural Centre's smaller venue.

Coloane Village South of the Cotai Strip, on Coloane Island. A genuine village atmosphere. Small Portuguese-style chapel, the original Lord Stow's egg-tart bakery, walking trails up Coloane's interior.

Taipa Village Restored Portuguese-Chinese village on Taipa Island. Cunha Street is the main pedestrian strip with souvenir shops, restaurants, traditional almond cookie houses.

Practical

  • Walking shoes — the calçada cobblestones are polished and slippery, particularly when wet.
  • Map: free at any major hotel concierge or the Macau Government Tourism Office.
  • Audio guide: free downloadable via the Macau Heritage Trail mini-programme on WeChat.
  • Sun protection — Macau gets hot and humid May–September.
  • Entry: most heritage sites are free. Macau Museum is MOP$15.
  • Night walking: Senado Square and Ruins of St Paul's lit dramatically after dark. Worth a second visit at night.
