Macau · Day trip
Macau as a day trip
Macau is small enough to do as a long day from Hong Kong or Zhuhai. The heritage trail, an egg tart, a Macanese lunch, and a casino-resort look are achievable in 8–10 hours.
From Hong Kong
Ferry route (most common)
- From Sheung Wan (Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal) to Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal.
- TurboJET runs every 15–30 minutes through the day.
- 60 minutes crossing time.
- HK$170–HK$200 each way (HK$220–HK$280 for upper class).
- Buy tickets online (Klook, Trip.com, TurboJET app) or at the terminal counter.
Alternative: Cotai Jet runs Sheung Wan to Taipa Ferry Terminal (closer to Cotai casino-resorts). Same frequency and cost.
Helicopter
Sky Shuttle Macau, 15-minute crossing. HK$4,300–HK$5,800 each way. Fly from the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal helipad direct to Macau.
Cross-border bus (HZMB)
The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge bus from Hong Kong's HZMB checkpoint (near the airport) to the Macau HZMB checkpoint. ~35-minute road journey. HK$65–HK$70 each way. Then connect to a free casino shuttle from the Macau HZMB checkpoint into central Macau.
This route is cheaper than the ferry but requires extra connection time. Total Hong Kong-to-Macau: 90+ minutes door-to-door.
From Zhuhai
The Gongbei border crossing connects Zhuhai (mainland China) and Macau Peninsula directly. Walk across; about 15 minutes through both immigration controls. From Zhuhai railway station the crossing is a 5-minute walk.
You'll need: - Valid Chinese visa or visa-free entitlement to leave Zhuhai. - Valid Macau visa or visa-free entitlement to enter Macau.
A reasonable day-trip itinerary
Assuming you arrive at Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal at ~10am and leave on a 9pm return ferry:
Morning (10am–12:30pm) - Exit ferry terminal; take a free casino shuttle (or a 10-minute walk) to the central Peninsula. - Walk Senado Square area: Senado, St Dominic's, the General Post Office. - 30 minutes at the Holy House of Mercy or Mandarin's House. - Walk up Rua de São Paulo to the Ruins of St Paul's. 30 minutes. - Climb Mount Fortress; visit the Macau Museum (1 hour).
Lunch (12:30pm–2pm) - Macanese restaurant near Senado Square or in Taipa Village. Try African chicken, baked pork chop bun, salt cod, plus an egg tart for dessert.
Afternoon (2pm–6pm) Pick one of: - **Heritage**: continue south on the trail — A-Ma Temple, Maritime Museum. - **Cotai casinos**: take a casino shuttle to Cotai. Walk through the Venetian's St Mark's Square recreation, the Parisian's Eiffel Tower, Wynn Palace's gondola tram. ~3 hours. - **Coloane**: shuttle to Coloane Village. Lord Stow's egg tarts; village atmosphere; small temples; beach if time allows.
Evening (6pm–8pm) - Dinner: Taipa Village (Tai Lei Loi Kei pork chop buns, or O Manuel for Portuguese seafood) or Senado Square area. - Or: take in a casino-resort dining room (Wynn Palace, Galaxy, Venetian) for the spectacle.
Return (8pm–9pm) - Free shuttle to Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, or to HZMB checkpoint. - Last ferries to Hong Kong typically run until midnight; HZMB buses also run late.
Money for a day trip
- Bring HK$500–HK$1,500 in HKD; widely accepted at par with MOP.
- Or use a contactless credit card for major payments (most casinos and mid-to-upper-tier restaurants accept).
- Some Macanese restaurants and small shops are cash-only or HKD/MOP only.
What to skip on a single day
- Casino gambling — entertaining but doesn't reward a 1-hour rushed visit.
- Coloane Village — go there, but only as a substitute for Cotai (not in addition).
- Macau Tower bungee jump — fine to see, but the ascent is 30 minutes that you might want elsewhere.
- The major casino-resort theatre shows (House of Dancing Water etc.) — these need an evening at minimum.
Things to bring
- Passport (multiple checkpoints).
- HKD cash + credit card.
- Comfortable walking shoes — calçada cobblestones are slippery and uneven.
- Phone with map app — Google Maps works in Macau (no GFW); Citymapper covers the city.
- Sunscreen + small umbrella in summer.
What about overnight?
If you can spend 1 night, Macau opens up substantially — you can do heritage on day 1, Cotai resorts on day 2, and add Coloane plus an evening show. The mid-range hotels in central Macau are HK$600–HK$1,200/night; Cotai resorts HK$1,200–HK$3,500/night.
