Industrial and Commercial Bank of China

中国工商银行 — State-owned commercial bank

Banking experience for foreigners

ICBC is China's largest bank by total assets and maintains a dedicated international-customer service offering in its major-city branches. Foreign passport-holders can open a personal account at any branch that has a foreign-affairs counter (外事服务台), though documentation requirements are thorough: you will typically need a valid passport, residence permit or long-stay visa, a Chinese mobile number linked to the account, and in some branches proof of address such as a rental contract.

Account opening in a tier-one city branch typically takes 30–60 minutes. ICBC's tellers in larger urban branches often have basic English; the bank has also deployed tablet-based translation systems at selected counters. The debit card — a UnionPay card — can be collected same-day. Online banking activation requires a Chinese mobile number for OTP verification. International transfers can be initiated in-branch; the process involves a standard SWIFT form and a declaration of funds purpose.

ICBC's mobile app (工银融e联) has improved its English interface significantly; the main functions — balance check, transfers within China, bill payment, and QR-code payments via Alipay or WeChat integration — are accessible in English. WeChat Pay and Alipay can be linked to an ICBC account even for foreigners holding a foreign-linked debit card, through the international version of those apps.

Key services

ICBC offers the full retail and commercial suite: savings and current accounts, personal loans, mortgages, foreign exchange, wealth management products (理财), and trade finance for business clients. Remittance is handled in-branch with standard documentation. Business banking requires a Chinese business licence; foreign-invested enterprises can open corporate accounts following SAMR registration. ICBC's foreign-exchange desk handles USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, HKD, and other major currencies.

Mobile app and digital banking

The ICBC mobile app supports an English-language interface covering core banking functions. UnionPay QR payments are supported; NFC card emulation is available on compatible Android handsets. iOS NFC functions depend on device and region settings.

Where to find branches

ICBC has branches in every province and major city across China. In Beijing, the Xicheng and Chaoyang district branches handle the highest volumes of international-customer requests. Shanghai branches on Nanjing Road and in Lujiazui are similarly oriented towards foreign clients. In smaller cities, English-capable staff may be limited to the head branch of each county.

Banking regulations and documentation requirements change. Confirm current requirements directly with your chosen branch before visiting. Account opening policies may differ between branches of the same bank.
