China Construction Bank

中国建设银行 — State-owned commercial bank

Banking experience for foreigners

China Construction Bank is one of the four main state-owned commercial banks and serves a large share of retail customers across China. For foreigners, CCB operates broadly similar account-opening procedures to ICBC and BoC: passport plus residence permit for a full-function account, with a Chinese mobile number mandatory for online banking. Some branches in tourist cities have piloted simplified account opening for long-stay visa holders, though requirements vary by branch and municipal policy.

CCB's retail branches are numerous and generally well-staffed; English proficiency at individual counters is variable outside major international districts. The bank has deployed multilingual service kiosks at some high-traffic branches, which can guide customers through account setup in English or other languages.

International transfers follow the standard SWIFT model with in-branch completion. CCB's foreign-exchange service covers major currencies; rates are competitive with the other major state banks. Debit cards are issued on the UnionPay network and can be used at ATMs worldwide where the UnionPay logo is displayed.

Key services

CCB's main retail lines include savings accounts, fixed deposits, personal loans, home mortgages, credit cards (primarily for domestic applicants), and wealth management. The bank has a major home-loan portfolio and is often the lender used for property purchases in new developments. Business accounts for foreign-invested enterprises require standard company registration documentation.

Mobile app and digital banking

CCB's mobile app (建行生活) supports basic English navigation for account management and transfers. UnionPay QR payment is functional. NFC payments are available on Android devices with NFC hardware.

Where to find branches

CCB has a very dense branch and ATM network. In practice, a CCB branch is accessible within a short walk in any urban district across China. International-friendly desks are concentrated in the Chaoyang and Xicheng districts of Beijing and in Pudong Shanghai.

Banking regulations and documentation requirements change. Confirm current requirements directly with your chosen branch before visiting. Account opening policies may differ between branches of the same bank.
