Octopus card, MTR and getting around
Hong Kong has the densest public transport network in Asia and one of the most usable for foreigners. The Octopus card opens almost everything; English signage is universal.
Octopus card
The Octopus is a contactless smart card used for almost every form of public transport plus convenience-store payment, vending machines, parking, and many small retailers. Buy at any MTR station's customer-service counter for HK$150 (HK$50 deposit + HK$100 stored value). Add value at MTR machines, 7-Eleven, Circle K. Refundable on departure.
Modern alternatives: - **Apple Pay / Google Pay with Octopus** — load Octopus to your phone, no card needed. - **Contactless credit card** — works on MTR turnstiles, buses, and most retail; tap-to-pay.
MTR (Mass Transit Railway)
11 lines covering the metro area. English signage and announcements throughout. Trains every 2–4 minutes peak, 5–8 minutes off-peak. Most stations have step-free access.
Major lines for visitors: - **Tsuen Wan Line** (red) — Central, Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok. - **Island Line** (blue) — Central, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Sheung Wan. - **Tung Chung Line** (orange) — to the airport (via Airport Express) and Lantau (Big Buddha). - **East Rail Line** (light blue) — to the mainland border crossings (Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau). - **South Island Line** — to Aberdeen, Ocean Park.
Fare HK$4–HK$60 per trip depending on distance.
