Zhuang

壮族. China's largest ethnic minority, the Zhuang are a Tai-speaking people of the limestone hills and river valleys of Guangxi whose bronze drum tradition, brocade weaving, and Three Sisters Festival mark a distinctive culture within southern China.

About this people

The Zhuang are China's largest ethnic minority by population, with approximately 18 million people concentrated in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and substantial communities in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guizhou, and Hunan. Their language belongs to the Tai branch of the Tai-Kadai family, making them closely related to the Thai, Lao, and Dai peoples of Southeast Asia. A standardised romanised writing system for Standard Zhuang was introduced in 1955.

The Zhuang homeland of Guangxi is characterised by dramatic karst limestone scenery — the pinnacle peaks and clear rivers of the Guilin-Yangshuo area are largely within the Zhuang cultural zone. The Zhuang have been rice farmers of the region for over 2,000 years and have a sophisticated tradition of terraced wet-rice cultivation, exemplified by the Longji (Dragon's Backbone) rice terraces north of Guilin.

Bronze drums are among the most significant objects in Zhuang material culture: cast since the Warring States period, they served as ritual instruments, symbols of chiefly authority, and burial goods, and the tradition of casting and playing them persists in ceremonial contexts. Zhuang brocade (壮锦, zhuangjin) — woven on a foot-pedalled loom in geometric and animal patterns on a cotton or silk ground — is among China's four famous brocades. The Three Sisters Festival (Sanjie Jie, held on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month) is a communal event of antiphonal folk song competitions (duige) that can last for days.
