Xibe

锡伯族. A Tungusic people descended from Qing garrison soldiers sent to Xinjiang in 1764 who preserved the Manchu language and archery tradition long after it faded in the northeast.

About this people

The Xibe people occupy a remarkable historical niche. Originally from the forests and plains of Manchuria, a large contingent of Xibe soldiers and their families — approximately 4,000 people — were ordered by the Qing court in 1764 to march westward to the Ili Valley in what is now Xinjiang to serve as garrison troops. This three-year journey covered thousands of kilometres. The anniversary of their departure, the 18th day of the fourth lunar month, is still celebrated annually as the Westward Migration Festival.

The Xinjiang Xibe community settled in the Ili Valley at what is now Chabuchar Xibe Autonomous County and maintained a distinct identity through garrison organisation, collective farming of the Ili River floodplain, and — crucially — continued use of the Xibe language and script, which is a late form of Manchu. While Manchu effectively became extinct as a spoken language in northeast China by the late 20th century, the Xibe of Xinjiang preserved it as a living tongue and written medium, making them custodians of the Manchu literary heritage.

Traditional Xibe crafts include embroidery with characteristically bold floral and animal designs, leatherwork, and archery equipment. Archery remains a point of cultural pride, and Xibe archers have performed well in national and international competitions. A smaller Xibe population remains in Liaoning and Jilin in the northeast, where they maintain cultural organisations though the language has largely given way to Chinese.
