The She people are dispersed across the mountain areas of Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, and Guangdong, with the largest concentrations in Fujian (around Ningde, where the Fuding and Xiapu areas have significant She communities) and in Zhejiang. Unlike many other southern minorities, the She do not have a compact autonomous homeland but live scattered in small communities among Han Chinese populations, often in the hills between coastal valleys.

The She language (Shehua) is sometimes classified within the Hmong-Mien family but has been so deeply influenced by Min Chinese that some linguists treat it as a Chinese dialect with Hmong-Mien substrate. The situation is complicated by the fact that many She communities switched entirely to Chinese speech generations ago. Cultural identity is maintained through distinctive material culture and ritual rather than language.

She women's festive dress is characterised by phoenix-pattern embroidery — intricate red, yellow, blue, and green thread work depicting phoenix birds and geometric designs — and by a phoenix crown (fengguang) headdress worn at weddings and festivals. The mythological ancestor Panhu (also shared with the Yao) is honoured in clan ceremonies. She oral literature includes long historical ballads (shanke) sung in a distinctive style, and singing competitions at festivals are a social highlight. The She have historically been known as skilled farmers of sloping tea land and mountain fields in the humid coastal hills of Fujian and Zhejiang.
