Maonan

毛南族. A Kam-Sui-speaking people of northern Guangxi's karst hills known for their carved bamboo hat tradition, cattle-centred ritual culture, and a distinctive Daoist-influenced ceremony called Fenglong.

About this people

The Maonan are concentrated in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County in the northern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, in the karst landscape between the Duliu River tributaries. Their population is small — around 100,000 — and their language belongs to the Kam-Sui branch of the Tai-Kadai family.

The Maonan are settled farmers of the karst valley floors, cultivating rice on terraced fields and raising cattle. The cattle — particularly oxen — have special significance in Maonan ritual and social life: cattle were given as bride price, sacrificed at major ceremonies, and feature prominently in communal festivals. The Fenglong (Celebrating Dragon) festival in the spring involves elaborate ceremonies at clan ancestral halls combining indigenous nature worship with Daoist liturgy in a style particular to the Maonan Three-Sect (Sanzong) tradition of local Daoism.

The Maonan carved hat (huagan hat) — a type of bamboo hat with intricate carved lattice work — is a traditional craft gift given at weddings and special occasions. The hats are made by specialist craftsmen who carve extremely fine geometric patterns into layers of split bamboo. Maonan embroidery uses floral and bird motifs on women's clothing. Traditional Maonan funerary practices involve elaborate paper effigies and offerings, with Daoist priests conducting the ceremonies that guide the soul of the deceased.
